The air smells like fresh rain.
Dark clouds rumble overhead, signaling that they are finished with their angry release.
My feet dangle off over the edge of the building while my head rests on the bright red colored railing. Huge skyscrapers loom over me, while the people down below look like ants, and the hovers that speed through the streets are multi-colored streaks of light.
This is my favorite spot in the whole world.
I can sit up here and think. Everything feels so much more real up here, away from everyone and everything. My own personal safe place.
Warm winds blow up from the mystical world below, blowing my ear-length hair out of my eyes. I smile as the yellow sounds of laughter, horns honking, and music fill my ears. I would give anything to be down there.
I would do anything to be a normal person, with no obligations or duties that they don't really understand.
The bell announcing midnight, the beginning of a new day, rings throughout the city. The world is consumed in it's vibrations, still. But after it's over, the city pulses back to life, like nothing ever happened.
I can't help but feel a twinge of envy. I am still stuck in my own numbing vibrations, still questioning if I will ever be myself again.
I groan as I force myself upwards from my sitting position, gripping the railing so hard that my knuckles turn white. Even with my magic taking away most of the pain, my injuries are screaming in protest, and it takes me longer than what I would have liked to get onto my feet. I stand there my upper body leaning on the railing, trying to catch my breath, remembering a time when this would have been the easiest thing in the world.
A few minutes later, I finally gather the courage to begin the long trek back to my room, only spurred on by the fact that someone was going to be coming to check on me soon. If the alarm is raised that I'm not where I'm supposed to be, all hell will break loose.
Almost in a daze, I stumble over to the hatch in the floor of the roof and lower my body into it. My feet hit the top rung of the ladder harshly, and I pause holding my breath, waiting to see if any guards will come and investigate the noise.
When I'm finally sure that no one else is around, I climb down the ladder. I am greeted by the shiny silver walls of an industrial room, it's sole purpose being the roof access.
I exit the room cautiously, and slowly, much to my disdain. Although I'm pretty positive that my brother and I are the only ones that know of its existence, you can never be too careful. Besides, I don't want to lose one of the only places in the world where I can have some time to myself.
I sneak through the marble-tiled hallways as fast and quietly as I can with my injuries. My heart pounds in my chest as I reach my room, the door slightly ajar. I could've sworn I closed it.
Pushing the door open slowly so it wouldn't squeak on it's hinges, I hesitantly step into my room. A breath of relief escapes from my mouth as I find it empty.
A glance at the digital clock embedded in the far right wall tells me that it's 12:10 in the morning. Suddenly, my heart rate increases again. I'm not out of the woods yet, whoever is checking on me should be here any minute now, and if one thing seems off, everything will be ruined.
I take off my shirt quickly, hissing as it catches on the bandages around my stomach. I fold it neatly and place it on the nightstand beside my bed. I run my hands through my hair, attempting to make it look unkempt with sleep. I pull the heavy covers up to my chin and close my eyes, and not a moment too soon.
