I opened my eyes, and what I saw astonished me beyond belief. I was soaring high in the clouds, flying right through them. I cast my gaze down, and I saw cars. What used to be bigger then me, now looked like small insects, skittering around. Then I looked to my side, and saw huge wings. They were a tan color with cream colored speckles all over them.
Never before have I felt so free.
It was like every last word and action of hate and anger towards me was gone into the ground. I felt something I have not felt in a very long time. Hope. That things could possibly change for the better. I realized something; I am something far more greater than I ever thought I would or could be.
I also realized something else; I didn't know how to land back on the ground with these things. I thought about seeing birds land, and the technique they used, but there were too many thoughts in my mind to just focus on that. Also, I had never really focused on birds, much less how they land.
I started flying closer towards the ground, where there was a wide, clear field. No barns or any people in sight. I focused on a certain spot of the field to land, and out of the corner of my eye I saw a red-tailed hawk. I had never seen one in real life before. I had seen them in paintings on buildings in the city and in some on billboards.
As I was trying to fly down, I attempted to slow my pace down by kind of flapping my wings backward instead of forward, but by doing so I started going faster, and I was still going towards the ground. I flailed my arms and legs around in panic.
"Oh my bloody god!!"
I screamed out as loud as I possibly could as the ground started to get closer. Then I flapped my wings a little slower, and I started slowing down. By the time I reached the ground and felt my feet touch the solid dirt and grass, my heart had slowed down enough so I had less of a chance of having a heart attack."That was hella close.." I muttered to myself, feeling like I was in a dream.
I pinched myself to be sure; I defiantly was not in a dream. I frantically looked across the field, to be sure no one saw me.
When I didn't see anyone, I took a couple deep breaths, and realized I was okay.
"I CAN FLY!!!!!" I yelled out to no one in particular. I pumped my fists in the air, and then quickly lost my balance, falling on my butt with a thud.
I tried to get back up again, but lost my balance again, this time falling on my front side. All that first-time flying must have made my legs weak and numb.
I sighed heavily, and rolled myself onto my back. I looked up to see a thin girl, with short chestnut colored hair, and freckles on her face, staring down at me."AHHHHHH!!" I screamed, quickly kicking my legs my legs in the air, trying to stand up. I started running as fast as I could.
"Hey, wait!" She called out to me.
I turned back to look at her, but I could no longer see her. I turned back around, and ran strait into a tree.
After I fell down and looked up, I realized that the tree had eyes and hair, it wasn't a tree, it was the girl.
"What do you want from me? You-you-you creep!"
She threw her arms up in the air, and flung them around.
"Hey! Says the person that is running around screaming like a freaking lunatic!"
"But you were just there, and now you're here, and-" the words stumbled out of my mouth, never quite seeming to want to stop."Hey, hey, calm down. I'm not going to hurt you." She said as she knelt down and reached her hand out to me.
"You look like you've been through a lot." She said, smirking.
I was still in shock.
At first, my life kind of sucked. I had no home, no money, nothing. Then, I find out I have wings, and that I can fly. And then there's this girl who turns into trees? I don't know anymore!
What is going on here?? Am I losing my mind?
"Hey, uh, dude, are you okay?"
I quickly snapped back to reality, and stood up.
"I'm fine, now who did you say you were again?"She smiled at me, and reached her hand out.
"Name's Evanine, what yours be?""You mean, 'What is yours?'. My name is. . ."
I pause for a second. Should I tell her? I don't even know who she is. For all I know, she acould be a puppy-napper who steals puppies and chops their tails off. I can't trust her.
"My name is Hale, why do you ask?"
"Hale. . . I like that!" She exclaimed.
"Uhh, thank you? I like yours too."
"I mean, I've heard a lot of names, but Hale? That's different."
"Yeah, yeah, my name's different, okay? Can we just get to the gist of why you were standing over me when I was in the field?!""I saw you.
"What are you taking about?
"Seriously? Please don't play dumb with me! I saw you flying! I know you have wings! So don't pretend I'm a looney okay?!"
I slightly squinted my eyes into a glare.
"I don't know who you think you are, but I don't know you, and I don't have to tell you anything. I haven't ever had anyone in my life to tell things to, so why start now?""Because I bet that this is something that you just discovered, am I right mate? I have abilities just like you. You don't have to close up!
"I don't have to tell you anything if I don't want to.
"Okay, so what's your plan because to me it doesn't look like you have one." She said, giving me a skeptical look.I gave her a look right back.
"Oh, and how the hell would you know?" I ask her, fighting but failing to keep myself calm.
She was annoying the hell out of me at this point.
"Because believe it or not, you're pretty easy to read. From what I've gathered, just a few minutes ago you discovered you could fly, right? I know your name, it's Birch, not Hal. Although, quick thinking. Also, I know you're running away from something. Whether it's your problems, or a person." She winked at me and punched my shoulder.
My jaw dropped after hearing what she said. How could she know all of that? Was she a stalker? Or just a seer?
"No, but I can change into any kind of animal at any moment." She takes off her sunglasses and I become aware that her eyes are a yellow-greenish color, much like cat eyes.
All of a sudden dust and dirt began swirling around her, and next thing I know, she has turned into a kangaroo.
She hopped up closer to me, brought her leg back, and swung it with full force right onto the area where the sun doesn't shine.
