Chapter Eight
Stefan has been a steady guide through the chaos of my new life. Each day, we train together, and he teaches me how to harness the urges that lurk just beneath the surface. We spend hours in the woods, practicing control, and I learn to block out the intoxicating pull of human blood. It's hard—harder than anything I've ever done—but Stefan is patient, always there with a calm word or a steady hand.
As our training session winds down, Stefan gives me a reassuring nod, signaling the end of another day's work. I feel a hint of pride—an odd sensation in the midst of all this upheaval—knowing that I'm making progress, even if it's slow.
"Let's call it a day," he says, a hint of a smile breaking through his usual serious expression. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small, intricately designed ring. "I had a friend help me with this," he explains, slipping it onto my finger. The stone gleams in the fading light, a deep blue, set in a delicate silver band.
I look up at him, confused. "What is it?"
"A daylight ring," he replies. "It'll allow you to walk in the sun. I figured it would make things easier... give you a chance at something close to normal."
The weight of his gesture hits me, and I smile, touching the ring with reverence. "Thank you, Stefan. Really."
He shrugs, but there's warmth in his eyes. "You'll get through this, Blaire. You're stronger than you realize."
The ring feels strange but comforting on my finger, a reminder that there's still hope, that this doesn't have to be the end of my life as I knew it. The stone glows faintly in the last rays of the sun, and for the first time, I feel a glimmer of freedom. The future feels uncertain, yet slightly less daunting. With Stefan by my side, I start to believe I might find a way through this after all.
...
One afternoon, as we take a break by the river, I glance at him, hesitating before I speak. "Stefan, there's something I haven't told you."
He raises an eyebrow, giving me his full attention. "Go on."
"Before... I was... I was a witch," I admit, the words barely more than a whisper. "He took that from me."
He looks at me, his expression thoughtful but understanding. "Which blood line?"
I feel the ache of loss all over again. "Andritsis. Before Damon turned me, I had a connection to magic. My mom... she was a witch too. It's like... it's like I lost a piece of myself when I became a vampire. I can't feel it anymore. I can't feel anything."
Stefan's gaze softens, and he moves closer, placing a hand on my shoulder. "I'm sorry, Blaire. I know what it's like to lose a part of who you are."
"It's like a void," I murmur. "One I don't know how to fill."
"We'll find a way," he promises, his voice steady and sure. "You may not be able to connect with magic in the same way, but that doesn't mean you can't still find a purpose. We'll take it one day at a time."
I meet his eyes, surprised by the intensity of his vow. For the first time, I feel a glimmer of hope that maybe—just maybe—I'll be able to cope with this loss. I give him a small smile, grateful for his presence.
He nods, a hint of a smile touching his lips. "You're stronger than you think, Blaire. And you'll only get stronger. Do you think you can handle things by your self tonight?"
"What's happening tonight?" I ask, a sudden wave of anxiety washing over me.
"Elena's hosting a dinner. She's invited Bonnie and me over to get to know each other better. I wouldn't leave you but it's important to your sister."
