"Come on Misaki, you have to move faster if you want to actually catch her."
Misaki looked at the man next to him, his trainer and teacher, Akami, as he moved flawlessly across the tree branches. Akami was an old man who has lived for about 150 years and yet he never slowed down. His eyes as red as fire and his hair grey from old age, but he was strong, fast, and definitely not one to be messed with. "Why are we hunting her again?" Misaki asked, jumping to the branch in front of him, landing silently on his tiptoes and he turned to look at Akami.
Akami stopped as well and looked at his trainee, the prince of hunters. Misaki was undoubtedly strong and smart but he asked too many questions. He always needed to know why they were on the mission they were on. He never accepted the idea of just listening to his parents, ever since he was child he always had that question. Why?
"What did she do?" Misaki asked again, his ears picking up on the sound of her feet touching the ground almost silently. That poor woman, her only mistake was that she was born a demon. "Did she kill a human?"
"No, Misaki.. We just need to follow our orders, can we?" Akami said.
"A hunter then, did she kill a hunter? or wait.. Did she look at him the wrong way? Sit where they were sitting? Eat from the same place? Did she breath the same air? Why are we killing this one Akami? Because the last one we killed, turned out to be a father-to-be and his wife had a miscarriage from the news. We killed her mate who did nothing but accidentally use a water bottle of a hunter," Misaki said, clenching his jaw. "Why are we killing her?"
Akami looked away and frowned. When the boy put it like this, it sounded horrible but that was their job. They were to eradicate the demon population but because of sanctions put on them there had to be a good cause, and now all the reasons were mere bullshit. And this sixteen year old boy knew exactly that they were bullshit. He could tell that this was not going to end well for either of them so he decided to make up a reason.
"She killed a hunter and his family, starting by the youngest," Akami said and Misaki nodded before running off to catch up with her. Akami felt bad for lying to the kid but it had to be done, he didn't knew when Misaki became so righteous.
Akami followed him and they had the demon cornered in no time. "Alright Misaki, now do as I told you."
Misaki looked at the woman who was cornered and was crying and he unsheathed his sword, raising it to strike.
"Mama.." a small voice said and Misaki looked over to see a child. Half human...
Misaki put down his sword and looked at Akami who was glaring at the kid. "Her mistake, was having a half human child? Having sex with a human.. that's why I am killing her?"
"Please don't hurt my mommy," The child cried and Misaki turned to look at him.
"Misaki, we have to."
"No we don't, we can say she ran away," Misaki said and then extended his hand to her, to help her up.
The woman took his hand and stood up only for Akami to take out his gun to kill her, but Misaki stepped in front of her. "She has a child, standing right there."
"She has to die."
Misaki raised his sword again but this time at Akami, the man who trained him since he was four. Akami frowned and then raised his gun at Misaki instead. "She told me to kill you, if you do this again, please Misaki.."
"Go," Misaki said and looked back at the woman behind him. She nodded and moved to go to her kid, and then Akami moved his gun toward the kid. "Akami, stand down!" Misaki said, clutching his sword tighter.
