Mr. Wells was writing the homework on the boards just as the bell rang marking the end of class. Same went on at the exact moment and second. Same voice yelling out the homework over the bell. Same noise of board hitting board. Same buzzing noise as zippers were being pulled. Everything in school was the same. But Lilah did not rush like the other thirty in her class because it wasn't worth the effort for she had nowhere to be and time to kill. She flipped her dark brown hair behind her shoulders as she got up from her desk and moved to the door.
"Lils, there is a test in history tomorrow about Cold War Two!" A tall, fair skinned boy exclaimed, just as she made her way out of the classroom. Lilah laughed in surprise, Damon was never good at History and this was the hardest unit they've had all year.
"The sky is blue!" Lilah said trying to imitate her friend. She had always made fun of his inability to remember she was in his history class.
"This isn't funny, Lils, I barely have an "-A" in that class, I don't want it to get any lower especially right before finals." Damon's deep brown eyes as big as a lemur's. Damon has never excepted anything lower than an "A" and Lilah always feared the day when he got one of those scores.
"Relax, will you? When have I ever turned down a study night with you?" Damon smiled and soon he relaxed, as if the whole world was still. Then he ran his hand through his pitch black hair and leaned on the wall behind him suddenly getting tense again.
"Are you sure he won't mind?" Lilah looked at her friend with confusion, only to laugh a moment later when she figured out what he meant.
"Are we going to go through this again? I told you he doesn't care, he's just happy I have friends." Damon smiled a little at her assurance and sighed. It was then that the bell rang for the last class of the day and everyone started to scramble. Lilah just took Damon's hand and together they walked to Biology.
Damon and Lilah were the last to walk through the door and sit down in their chair when the holograph appeared. Today it was a male dressed in the usual lab coat and holding a transparent board which showed names highlighted in green and red depending on who was present and who wasn't. When he was done he looked up and smiled.
"Hello there, and welcome to UCSF Medical Center. Today, you will be introduced to the cure of cancer and how it..." He continued on, but Lilah had no interest in learning science lessons from him, she learned that lessons from Damon made more since. Her eyes wandered to a corner and remained there while she thought.
She thought about the Black Day, as she and Damon have come to call it, and how it had ruined her father's life, changing him forever. Since Lilah had been present when it happened, her father had sheltered her, barely letting her go outside let alone to school. Damon was the to convince him promising that nothing will ever happen to her. Her father was better now; He had a job again, he respected Lilah's freedom even if that meant leaving him forever which Damon, again, talked them out of.
Damon had been friends with Lilah since his family moved to the city when they were just toddlers. He was the kind of friend who would leave a dinner with the president just because you needed someone to talk to. He was there for Lilah when she was sick, and he never missed a single birthday even when her family had canceled the party. He was there when she had fallen off the tree and dislocated her arm. And, like all those other times, he was there on the Black Day, when her father shut her out and she had nowhere to go.
Lately they have succumbed to her room where they would study and do homework together until his curfew arrived and he had to return home. Lilah had seen his house before, but she has never been in it on Damon's request. It was huge like hers but his looked like a royal's, all expensive looking with curtains that they couldn't have possibly found anywhere in America.
