So I guess Grayson wasn't crazy. Just sad. It felt good to comfort him, though. I liked being with him.
I felt like it would be best for him to not be on any medications, considering he didn't seem to need them.
I found the head doctor, Jan, who deals with prescribing medications for all of the patients. "Hi Jan, I was wondering if you could change the prescription for Grayson Dolan."
I handed her his file. "What would you like to change?"
"I'd like to take him off of all meds. I think that keeping him on all these meds will be counterproductive for his condition."
She scanned over the file. "I can do that, except for one drug."
"Which drug?"
"Alunice."
All of my patients were on this drug, but I'd never heard of it. "What is it? I'm not familiar with this one."
"Oh, it's just a mild antidepressant. It also keeps patients under control physically to make sure they don't hurt themselves or someone else."
She had this look in her eyes, like she was just telling a straight up lie. I couldn't go against the prescription without getting fired, though, so I just played along. "Alright, thank you Jan."
"No problem, Elizabeth."
I walked back to Grayson's room. Again, I saw him through the small window on his door, and he had a blank expression on his face, like he had nothing left to live for.
I opened the door slowly. He looked up at me, smiling a little bit. "Hi Grayson."
"Hi Lizzie." He seemed instantly happier.
"I have good news." I sat down next to him on his bed, my hand laying next to his.
"Yeah?"
"I got you off of all of your meds."
"Really?"
"Well, there's one that you still have to take, but you don't have to take any of the other ones."
"Thanks."
"Of course." I looked down at my watch. "I have to go take care of some other patients, I'll see you in a little bit."
"Stay." Grayson put his hand in mine, interlocking our fingers. He looked into my eyes with his lips barely an inch from mine. "For just a little bit longer. Please."
It was so hard not to kiss him. "I'm sorry. I have to give meds to a few patients, but I'll be back as soon as I'm done. I promise."
"Okay." He stared at the wall expressionless as I walked out the door.

I went back to Grayson's room about twenty minutes later. I opened the door. "Hi Gray."
"Hey Lizzie. What's that?" He said pointing at the cardboard box in my hands.
I stepped inside the room, shutting the door behind me slowly. "I brought you a few things. I got you a book, some markers and a coloring book, and a deck of cards."
"Thanks." He smiled as I handed him the box. "Now I can actually do something other than stare at the wall."
"Do you wanna play cards?"
"Sure."
Grayson and I played a bunch of different card games, and we just talked and laughed. I loved being with him and I felt like we already had gotten to know each other so well.
"I thought this place was gonna suck," Grayson started, "but it's nice here with you. I like you a lot, Lizzie." He seemed happy and that made me happy.
"I like you too, Grayson. I had a great first day at work with you."
There was a knock on the door, followed by the creak of it opening slowly. "Hi Grayson, it's time to take your medication again." Meg, one of the nurses, walked in carrying a pill and a small cup of water.
"Oh, hi Elizabeth, I thought your shift already ended."
"What time is it?"
"Six."
"Yeah, um, I was just spending some extra time with Grayson."
"If you say so." Grayson took his meds and Meg left.
"I should probably go home. My shift ended over an hour ago."
"Okay." Grayson gave me a hug. He was so sweet. "I'm glad you stayed."
"Me too. Bye Grayson."
"Bye Lizzie."
I left his room only to find Meg waiting for me right outside the door. "Did you see the way he was looking at you? He likes you."
"So what?"
"You like him too."
"Is it really that obvious?"
"Yeah, but you should probably start hiding that. There's a rule about staff not being allowed to be in relationships with patients."
"Thanks for letting me know, but some rules were made to be broken."
