Her mother's bed was led to the room she had been in before and Lilly followed them with her father. Lilly's mother was still asleep but Lilly jumped on the edge of the bed and kissed her forehead. The baby wasn't in the room with them. She was downstairs with the doctors so they could take care of her. But Lilly couldn't wait. She kept nagging her father to go get the baby. After 3o minutes of the continuous nagging of Lilly, finally her father went to check on the baby and a few minutes later he entered the room with the baby in his arms looking down at that little beauty he was holding. She was truly and angel. Her father felt like he shouldn't let go of her and that he should keep holding her but then after stealing a few more glances at her he put her in the crib the hospital had left them in the room.
Lilly then changed places with her father as he went to check on her yet sleeping mother and she went to the crib. She looked at her baby sister and hoped she could hold her but the crib was too long for Lilly to reach over it and bend down to get the baby. She kept staring at her for a while so did her grandmother that Lilly couldn't even acknowledge she was with them in the same room.
The baby was so pretty, Lilly could stare for eternity. Her feet were so tiny and her mouth was closed. After a while the baby opened her eyes. They were big and grey and Lilly felt she could get lost in them. Lilly felt like the baby was somehow staring back at her and she loved it. She knew at that moment that her and her sister would have tons and tons of fun and that they will love each other.
She heard her mother stammering and she ran over to her. Her mother barley had her eyes open but she locked hands with Lilly. She asked where is the baby and her father went to get the baby. She let go of Lilly's hand and opened her eyes as the father put the baby into her arms. She smiled that kind of smile when you feel relived and SO overjoyed on the inside that you can't show on the outside except with a simple smile, a genuine smile. Lilly's father grabbed the camera and took a picture to make the moment last. It was on august the eleventh.
2 days passed, still in the hospital, spend by Lilly's gentle touches and stares at the newborn. It was finally the day of the departure and as they were walking away from the room, the doctor came to Lilly and handed her an orange watch with a hello kitty drawing in the middle of it and a cube puzzle game that consists of 6 cubes. He said "your sister brought you these as she came down" and with that he smiled and left. Lilly couldn't believe at first but she came around and believed it. She smiled instantly and she was sure that her and her sister loved each other. They were in fact a gift from her mother and a gesture to make Lilly love her sister more. But she didn't need to as Lilly already did dearly.
When they got home, her mother told her not to ever carry the baby because her arms were childish and weak and she might drop the baby. But of course Lilly wouldn't listen. She would pretend she was asleep and wait for her parents to sleep so she can go and carry the baby. She would plant little kisses over her shoulder and feet and hands and nose. She practically showered her with kisses. She would put her in the baby cart and push her sometimes slowly sometimes fast. She loved her so much.
On one day, they all went to the doctor to check up on the baby girl. That doctor was Lilly's doctor, too. That's why they went to him. He did the check up on the baby and he put a smile on his face and told them that she was fine. He was lying.
Maybe he knew what was wrong with her and he didn't want to ruin the happiness evident on the family's faces. They were all smiling and they had that twinkle in their eyes. Maybe he couldn't bring himself to tell them that their baby girl had something permanently wrong with her and there's was nothing to do about it. Maybe it was the right choice.
Maybe they should've noticed that she didn't cry as much as normal babies did but they were blinded by happiness and longing
A few days later, the baby's lips turned blue and her mother noticed. All three of them rushed into the car and drove quickly to the nearest hospital. Lilly didn't take notice in what were the doctors saying. All she knew is that they went home without her that night and that they were coming back to visit her the next day.
Lilly thought it happened with all babies and that most of them stayed at the hospital for a couple days maybe because she was still a naïve child or maybe because she refused to believe that there was something wrong with the her significant other. Mostly because of the first reason.
Day after day, they would visit her and the mother would tell Lilly every time she asked when her sister was coming out that her sister had tubes inserted in her lungs and she isn't leaving for a while yet Lilly thought it was normal. She waited and waited for her sister to come out. Every minute that passed without her seemed like a year. She was like a drug, once you take it, you can't give it up. Yet Lilly would still wait for her to come out just like that day in the hospital when her father brought her up to the room.
