Prologue

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Bright sunlight filtered through the leaves, peppering the clearing with mini dots. A light breeze ruffled the leaves overhead, causing a few to float down to a stop on the sandy colored earth. A frog hopped to and fro near the pond at the edge of the clearing which was surrounded by tall trees.

A lithe cat appeared from behind one tree, starlight sparkling in its fur. It padded to the edge of the pond, staring expectantly at the trees, waiting for something.

As if the cat's wish was granted, another smaller starry cat appeared, casually strolling out to the pond. He, too, stopped at the water's edge. Gazing at the cat beside him, he followed her gaze until his eyes rested on the same spot that she was staring intently at. Lost in his own thoughts, when the first cat finally spoke, he jumped up in surprise.

"I knew you would come," the first cat mewed, startling the tom. He narrowed his eyes at her before replying.

"Yah, well I knew you'd be here," he shot back. Silence greeted his words except for the movement of the leaves overhead and the sound of prey scuffling through the undergrowth.

"Temper's short today, is it not, Darkcloud?" the first cat mewed after a moment's hesitation.

Anger blazed in Darkcloud's eyes, but when he spoke again he sounded weary, but calm. "If I say yes will you give me what I want?"

"If I say no, will you, by chance, leave?" she questioned sarcastically.

"Not a chance. Besides, why should I?" Darkcloud retorted. Once again, silence greeted his words. He snorted, frustrated with this cat, and started pacing the clearing.

The first cat heaved a long sigh. Finally, she asked, "What would you like to know?"

Surprised that she actually offered to help him, Darkcloud stopped pacing and asked the question that he dreaded most. "The future of the clans. Is what everyone's saying true?"

"Why ask me?" she mewed, looking straight into his eyes. "I'm obviously not your favorite cat nor the one with the most knowledge."

"So what? Why question my motives?" he challenged.

She purred, amused. Then her expression faded into something much more somber. "The answer to your question is yes, it's all true."

Taken aback, he mewed, "But how? Can't we do anything to stop it?"

"We cannot," she answered gravely. "Darkness awaits in the path of the clans. Evil will awaken, whether we want it to or not."
