It was 1 in the morning and Emma Carstairs was still up. She was staring out of her window looking at the ocean. The sun had gone down hours ago and the only light outside was the faint illumination of the moon.Even though she was terrified of the ocean, Emma couldn't deny the fact that there was something terribly beautiful about the sight of it. She had always thought the ocean held al lot of secrets. Maybe it could hold her secret too. Julian. Even his name sent a stab of pain through her heart. She knew that she had hurt him when she fell out to him this afternoon. She had always known that Julian would get a lot of admirers when he got older. But knowing something and actually witnessing it were two entirely different things and she couldn't quite shake the feeling of jealousy. Jealousy towards the girls who got the chance to be his.
She knew she hadn't been fair to him.
"Are you okay?" He had asked her.
He had flinched when she had answered as if you care.
She had ask him to leave her alone after that and had come to her room to wallow in self pity. There she had sat in the same place for hours. She didn't remember when the tears had started, only that she hadn't been able to stop them. But her eyes were dry now. She was done crying.
She stood up and walked to her closet to change into her pajama. A pair of shorts and a tank top. She might as well go to bed , there was little she could do now anyways. She would apologize to Julian in the morning and pushback her feelings the way she had been doing for months now.
She was already in bed when she heard someone knocking on the door.
"Em, are you still up?"
It was Julian. She could pretend she was sleeping and deal with him tomorrow. But that wouldn't be fair to him. He probably couldn't sleep. He hated it when she was upset. Especially if he thought it was his fault. So she walked out of bed and opened the door.
"What is it, Jules?"
"Can I come in?" He asked.
She stepped aside and allowed him to step into the room.
"Did I wake you up?" He asked.
She shook her head. Falling asleep had proven to be near impossible.
Julian was looking at her with his big blue green eyes. A Blackthorn family trait. He was also in his pajama. A white T-shirt with black shorts. Like most of his clothes they were paint splattered. He took a step closer to her and gently wiped her cheek.
"Have you been crying?" He asked looking at her worriedly.
She turned her head away from him not wanting to look at him. She hadn't bordered cleaning up hair face. She couldn't even imagine what she must look like now.
"Emma, look at me." He pleaded.
She looked up at him while his eyes scanned her face looking for a clue to explain her odd behavior earlier.
"I'm sorry." She began.
But before she could finish her apology she was rendered speechless by soft lips crashing onto her own. Julian tentatively traced his hands across her back like she was a fine piece of art he was scarred of breaking. She knew she should break away, but she couldn't bring herself to do so. Instead she slowly raised her arms to finger Julian's soft brown hair. An other Blackthorn family trait. Having gained some confidence, Julian deepened the kiss and picked her up. She wrapped her legs around him. They slowly moved back and crashed on the bed not breaking off the kiss.
Emma had always prided herself on her strength, her unwillingness to give into anything. But it took almost all of her willpower to pull away from Julian and what was left of it was spend refraining herself from diving right back into the kiss.
"No you didn't do anything wrong." She said, answering the unspoken question that hung in the air. "But this can't go any further, you're my parabatai Jules. It's against the rules."
"Weren't you the one." He said. "Weren't you the one who said that rules were meant to be broken."
She smiled at him. Jules, her Jules. This beautiful broken boy. Who held the weight of the world on his shoulders but refused to break under it, who had felt so much pain and had seen so much destruction at such a young age. This boy who knew not only her but her soul. Even the darkest bits. And she wanted to be with him so bad.
"What if the Clave finds out?" She asked him.
"They won't. I promise. We will be careful."
"I love you, Jules."
"I love you too, Em." He said gently kissing her temple.
This wasn't the first time she had heard those words, but they seemed so different this time, a lot more intimate.
She moved off of him and laid next to him. He held her tightly. They fell asleep like that in each other's arms. The end.
[ AN: I wrote this fanfic about 3 years ago, after City Of Heavenly Fire had just been released. At the time I was toying with the idea of adding more chapters, unfortunately nothing has and will probably ever come of that. But considering I wrote this fic when I was 14, when my English was truly terrible, I decided to fix some of my mistakes. My English and this story are still pretty terrible, but at least they aren't as bad as they used to be. Now that we have more content about Emma and Julian, I know that they are very OOC character in this fic. But I hope you guys can look past that because I really can't be bothered to fix it. Thank you for reading this story. I really do appreciate it.
Lots of love,
BBIY]
