Six-year-old Jungkook ran to his mother, laughing until tears fell out of his eyes and his body clashed into her open arms.
"Again again!" He exclaimed, hugging his mother tightly and grinning from ear to ear.
"Alright one mo-"
"Jungkook!" His father called from the doorway. And the boy's smile immediately dropped, dreading what was about to come.
His mother pulled him back and whispered into his ear.
"He's just about there baby. Mommy is trying her best to change him. Hang in there for me, okay?"
Jungkook nodded slowly, still saddened that it was mandatory for him to train everyday. Because he knew it was wrong, everything about it. His mother made him realize it.
She was the most warm-hearted person he had ever known. And his love for her was eternal.
Later that night, they sat together on the boy's bed. They listened to the wind as it flowed in and out the open window, and no words were needed at this moment.
But young Jungkook had many questions.
"Mommy, if you're human, why do you stay with daddy?" His high voice rings through the whistling wind, and she smiles to herself.
"Love makes you do crazy things sweetheart. You'll understand once you're older." She laughs to herself, and the boy looks up at her with widened eyes.
"That's what every grown-up says. How come I can't understand n-"
"JUNGKOOK LOOK OUT!"
And all he remembered was being in her arms, his eyes squeezed tight and his ears muffled as she pulled him into her chest, shielding him from what was later revealed as...
an arrow.
And as her body fell to the ground, the boy's eyes were met with the back of a running figure.
Hooded, and with a bow in their hand. The look of the cloak was familiar, but with the boy's yet to develop vocabulary, the noun was on the tip of his tongue.
He remembered his mother teaching him this word, and to never go near the people who wore those robes ever. That they're dangerous and they'll hurt him. And if he ever saw one, to call for a guard immediately.
And then it clicked.
Assassin.
So, Jungkook ran. Unknowing that the light of his life was now laying dead in his bedroom, with an arrow right through her once warm heart.
"Assassin! Assassin!" He had screamed, like an alarm ringing through the halls. Black hooded guards ran to the boy's bedroom in an instant, and while he was confused as to why they yelled his mother's name, he tried his best to follow them with his little legs.
He was so excited to see how proud his mother would be at how he had gone immediately to the guards just like she had told him, but when he entered the room, his brain was imprinted with a brand new scene that would be carved into the depths of his mind forever.
And after that, he was detached.
Detached from everything.
His father returned to his max capacity of cruelty, and only made the law of murdering humans much worse. He favourited Junghyun, and punished Jungkook far more than his brother.
But Jungkook knew it was because he was to blame for the death of his mother.
That's how the boy grew up to try and live up to his father's expectations, terrified of how bad the punishments would get if he messed up. And despite the feeling deep inside of his heart that reminded him of just how cruel the ways of his life were, he was blinded by expectations, pressure, and the need to impress his father.
Somehow, the human world was like an escape. Watching the lives they lived brung peace to his mind, and all he wanted in his broken life was to understand. Not only his mother, but why he was so intrigued.
He clutched his heart as he sat on a park bench. He knew these feelings were the human inside of him sparking. He would wonder everyday, how different things could be if his father had just lived in this world instead of the Underworld.
Why does he still watch them? Why does he come back to this place so often? What was the invisible force that pulled him to this place like a magnet?
And on a cold, winter's day in an art classroom, he found his reason.
