Chapter 2

"What were you thinking!" I winced at the near screeches of my best friend and now Royal Advisor, Amy G. Dala.

"I had my gun. I was fine," I inserted. Amy went rigid and was in my face in an instant.

"Your gun, huh? What's one measly little laser gun going to do against the Soicraltees? Didn't seem like it was doing you much good when he had you pinned against that tree, now did it?" She hissed. This was actually why I chose her to be my Royal Advisor. While I was admittedly overconfident, a little too adventurous, and quite heedless, Amy was reserved, prudent, and cautious. My exact opposite and everything needed to balance out a good ruler.

I huffed, refusing to allow her this point against me, "I was fine!" I stormed over to the window and leaned against the windowsill, choosing to stare at the space cruisers rather than at Amy. A new fleet was flying in as the other took off to refuel and rest. I scowled and looked away.

Amy saw this and quickly reverted to understanding. She walked over and gave me a hug, then patted my shoulder as she stared out over the city. The castle sitting on a hill in the middle of the rings gave the perfect view to how this was affecting my citizens. And you couldn't even see the agricultural ring from the castle. I bit back a sob.

"It's my fault they're suffering," I whispered, a lone tear drifting down my cheek.

"Who is suffering?" Amy asked.

"Them!" I shouted, throwing my hand toward the window, "Because I won't accept a stupid marriage proposal, they have to suffer! Right after I become queen! I am the worst ruler ever!"

The sound of skin on skin contact echoed through the room, causing some of the servants in the hallway to stop and stare in fear. I pulled my face back to the front, my cheek burning from where she just slapped me, and moved to sit on my bed.

"I deserved that," I mumbled.

"Yes you did."

Amy walked over to shut the door, glaring at the nosey servants that didn't hustle back to work. I fell backwards onto the bed, unsure of where my next step should be. Amy stood beside the bed, looking down on me before glancing out over the city once again. She jumped over me to the other side of the bed, crouching down and pulling a gun from seemingly nowhere.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

No response. She kept the gun leveled at the window and I gasped when I saw Dakota squatted on the ledge, staring straight at me. My chest constricted and I couldn't help the hand that traveled to my chest and clutched at where my heart sat. It felt as if his amber eyes were piercing into my soul.

"Unit one. Heir spotted outside queen's window. No movement as of now. Act fast. Corner him," Amy shouted into her radio, looking back at me as if to confirm I was still there.

He was gone.

"Unit one moving in," came the response from Amy's radio, filled with static.

"Don't bother. He's gone," she growled back.

"Those Soicraltees move fast huh?" I asked, surprising myself at how soft my voice was.

"Too fast," Amy replied. She eyed me suspiciously as I walked to the window. I laid a hand against the cold glass, staring at the spot where he had previously been.

"I thought you were against a marriage with him?" I jumped at the break in silence.

"What?" I turned around to face her, thoroughly confused.
