Life is good. I have a loving family, great friends, and I make good grades. That is until my parents dropped the bomb on me one afternoon.

"Skylar," my mom says, quietly, "your Dad and I got new jobs."

I looked up from putting my breakfast in the toaster.

"Well, that's great news!" I exclaim. They have been out of work for almost 3 years now.

"Yeah, it is. Bu-" I cut her off.

"Oh gosh! Look at the time! I'm gonna be late for school! Love you Mom, Dad!" I took a bite one last bite of my toast, kissed my parents, and ran to my car. I have a 15 minute drive to my school. When I get there, I park in my usual spot-third row from the entrance, fifth parking spot over. Then I gathered my books and bag and get out of the car. But I felt like something was wrong. I could remember cutting my mom off earlier this morning, but I didn't think that could be it. She was probably asking me if I wanted to hear about their new jobs.

I made my way to the school and into the gym and looked for my friends. At my school, before the first bell rings, all the students have to go the gym in the mornings for safety reasons. I went up the bleachers and sat by Peyton. She is my best friend and we have been through everything together. I met her in first grade.

"Hey, girlie!" She exclaimed as I sat down, a smile on her face.

"Hey, Peyton." I reply.

"Something wrong?"

"I can't figure it out."

"Oh. Well did you get my text this morning?" She asked, cocking her head to the side.

"Crap! That's what I forgot!" I exclaimed. "I don't think I have ever gone a day with out my cell phone with me." When the bell rang, we made our way to our lockers, which are right next to each other. I thank god for that.

After I go get my books out of my locker that I needed for my class, I walked Peyton to class, then went to my first class, Geometry. Math is defiantly my weakest subject, even though I make all A's.

Half way through the day, when I was about to leave my gym class for lunch, the teacher, Mrs. Smith, called me over to tell me I was being picked up. I made my way to the office to see my mom sitting in their with a worried look on her face.

"Mom, whats wrong?" I asked, quietly.

"I tried to tell you this morning but you left right before I got it out." She said, slowly.

"Okay, well tell me now."

"Why don't we go out for lunch?"

"Alright. I drove to school today so I will meet you at the restaurant." I already knew where she was talking about. It is a small hole in the wall place that has the best burgers. We go there all the time. I got in the car and started driving.

When I got to the restaurant, my mom was already there and seated. She had ordered me a sweet tea, my favorite drink.

"Thanks for ordering for me." I took a drink of it.

"You are welcome, honey." She said, looking down, twiddling her fingers.

"Okay, you need to tell me. Where's dad?"

"At home, packing." She said, barley above a whisper.

"What? Why is he packing? Where in the hell could we be goi-" Then I realized. Their jobs were out of the state, or even the country for all I knew.

"I'm sorry. I know that you don't want to leave your friends behind and the house you grew up in but your dad and I have to go to work again. We are barley hanging on anymore."

I just sat there. I didn't know what to do, say, or anything. I felt helpless. I didn't want to leave Peyton and my other friends.

"I'm not hungry anymore." I said, flatly. I stood up, got in my car and went home. I took a shower and went to bed, trying to block it out.
