Chapter Five

“Oh, where’s the elephant from?” Morgan asks Lila as Lila strips out of the clothes she had worn that day. Lila grins at Morgan once she has slipped on the white nightgown, “Sam won it for me!”

Morgan raises her eyebrows, “Sam? You’ve been hanging out with Sam a lot. Is there something you’re not telling me?”

Lila jumps onto her bed, holding Gus tight to her chest. “What? No? He’s just Sam.” Lila answers, yet, she feels like she’s lying to both Morgan and herself.

Morgan gives a low chuckle, “just Sam?”

Lila feels a blush start over her cheeks and she looks down at her bed.

“Mmhm. Keep telling yourself that honey. Okay, good night. Don’t forget that you have the meeting tomorrow morning at eleven.” Morgan whispers the last part before switching off the lights. Lila groans at the reminder. She hates the monthly meetings.

“How is everyone doing?” The nurse asks with a smile. No one answers. Lila makes eye contact with a boy who then rolls his eyes. Lila smiles at him and the nurse then asks Lila what she’s smiling at. Lila shoots the boy a glare before telling the nurse that she’s happy that the meeting is only half an hour. Everyone laughs and the nurse turns red, telling everyone to settle down.

“Lila, how is progress going for you?” The nurse asks her. Lila stiffens and looks down at her hands.

“Okay I guess. Nothing’s really changed since last month.” She answers the annoying nurse truthfully.

“Same for me.” The eye-rolling boy speaks up. Lila looks up and meets his eyes again.

“James, you get to leave soon, don’t you?” The nurse asks patiently. She sure does ask a lot of questions Lila thinks to herself sourly.

James shifts in his seat uncomfortably and looks around the room, all eyes on him.

“Yeah, I get to leave in two weeks possibly.”

Lila feels jealous of James, but claps when the nurse asks the room to congratulate him on his progress.

“That’s great to hear, James. Maybe you’ll come back and visit!” The nurse says brightly. A little too brightly. She’s sitting in a room full of teens that are on the brink of death here.

“Okay, we will see you lot next month! Go on, it’s a beautiful day!”

“Some people can’t go outside anymore.” A little girl shoots at the nurse before walking out of the room. Lila flinches at that thought. Can’t go outside?

“Hey, I just wanted to thank you for not ratting me out.”

Lila turns and see James standing behind her.

“Not ratting you out? Are you stupid? Even if I told her what you did it would not be “ratting you out”. I just didn’t feel like putting the spot light on you, but hey, it sounds like you deserved it.” Lila snaps. She instantly feels bad once the words leave her mouth. She closes her eyes and sighs, “sorry.”
