Happy Fourth of July. It's funny, all day today I was thinking that last year, on this day, I was in London at the Harry Potter studios. Sigh. To be there again....

Chapter Ten

“He was perfect.” Lila sighed out. James made a face and started making gagging noises. Lila scoffed and lightly shoved James, making him laugh.

“Someone is in love!” James poked Lila in the cheek and Lila felt herself heat up.

“I wouldn’t call it love…” She mumbled with James’ finger still pressed into her cheek.

Lila and James were hanging out at the beach together. They were standing on a balcony of a restaurant and Lila had just finished telling James about the date that Lila and Sam had gone on two days ago.

“Have you text him?” James asked before taking a big spoonful of ice cream. Lila quickly shook her head, “No way! Not yet. I’ll probably try tonight or tomorrow.”

James laughed. “Girls are so complicated.”

Lila rolled her eyes. As she was in the process of rolling her eyes, she spotted Sam sitting in his usual spot on the beach.

“Ah, so you’ve finally spotted him.” James chuckled and threw away his bowl.

“What? What do you mean finally?” Lila spluttered out.

“He’s been here as long as we’ve been here.” James shrugged like it was no big deal.

“What if he sees us together?” Lila feels a pit in her stomach and she starts panicking.

“I thought you weren’t in love.” James mocked her.

“Just because I’m not in love, doesn’t mean that I don’t like him a lot and I don’t want him to get the wrong-“

“Relax. Breath. Count with me, one, two-“

“I hate you.” Lila interrupted him and James starting booming with laughter.

Once James was done with his laughing, he turned to look at Lila, and he became very serious.

“When are you going to tell him?”

“Soon.” Lila started fidgeting under James’ stare.

“That’s what you always say.”

Lila suddenly felt like crying, “What am I supposed to say? Oh hey, Sam, sorry to inform you but I’m slowly wasting away and there’s nothing I can do. Not even chemo will really help. So, I don’t want you to fall in love with me even though the thought sounds perfect to me?” Lila was nearly screaming and James felt guilty as he watched his friend start falling apart.

“You can’t keep it a secret forever. Do you realize how skinny you’ve gotten?”

Lila nodded her head. She had noticed when she was getting ready for her date. How frail and weak she’s starting to look.

“I know. I’ll tell him. I promise.”

Sam was sitting at the beach. Thinking. Two days. It had been two days since their date. Had he done something wrong? Or maybe she likes James more, Sam thought haughtily. Was James better than he was? Sam quickly shook his head. No way would she choose that dumbass over him, would she?

“Even though it sounds perfect to me?” Sam turned his head toward the yelling he had heard.

There stood Lila with James. Lila looked like she was about to break down. She was running her hands through her hair and refused to look at James. James glanced over at Sam and Sam’s face hardened. What the hell is going on?

Sam saw James shake his head, as if telling Sam to stay where he is. Sam watched as James muttered something to Lila who started to calm down a little. Lila stepped forward and wrapped her tiny arms around James who returned the gesture.

Sam saw red.

He saw red until he noticed that Lila was staring at him over James’ shoulder. She gave him a weak smile before pulling away from James and pointing toward Sam. James gave Lila a wicked smile and Lila punched his arm before walking towards Sam.

Sam started panicking, wondering what he should do. What to say. He was about to march over to James and knock him in the eye, but now that Lila was walking over, he didn’t know what to do.

“Hey.” She mumbled softly to him. She didn’t sit, but stood close.

“Hi.” Sam stared up at her. She’s become so pale since they met. He couldn’t help but worry. It was then that Sam decided that he could do it.

“I have a confession.” Both of them said in union.

“You go first.” Lila quickly responded and sat down besides the brown-eyed boy.

Sam felt his heart thud in his chest, he wondered if Lila could hear it. He swallowed hard before speaking in a low whisper, “I think I’m in love with you.”
