Taeyong hears the little padding of feet running across the hall. If he listens close enough he can hear the little toddler talking to himself quietly. He lies back and snuggles deeper into the covers. If only there was a body lying next to him that he could snuggle into.
He and Jaehyun got married two years ago but had been dating for nine. They met at university where Taeyong had studied dance and Jaehyun music. After they graduated Jaehyun decided to enlist in the military. He left Taeyong for months at a time but always returned and made sure their days were filled with love and happiness.
When Taeyong became pregnant with Jisung, Jaehyun was just about to leave for the military again, but he promised to be back in time for his baby boy's birth.
Jaehyun kept that promise and returned to welcome their son into the world.
Taeyong smiled at those memories and closed his eyes drifting back to sleep again. Until he heard the door creak open, followed by small feet padding towards his side of the bed.
"Papa?" the voice whispered, but Taeyong didn't budge,
"Papa are you awake?" the voice asked again, but still no reply. The toddler let out a frustrated groan and attempted to climb on to the bed. Small grunts were heard as the boy hoisted himself up onto the bed. Taeyong could feel his toddler's small hands feeling his way towards him,
"Papa!" the boy said loudly and jumped on to his father. Taeyong groaned as he slowly began to open his eyes,
"Papa, wake up!" the toddler whined,
"Okay, baby, okay I'm up," Taeyong said groggily and sat up against the headboard. He opened his arms inviting the toddler to snuggle. The boy happily accepted and shuffled into his father's arms. Taeyong ran his fingers through his baby's hair, admiring how long it was,
"Did you sleep good, baby?" he asked and the boy answered with a nod and a small "yes" playing with the hem of his father's shirt.
The two sat there for a while just snuggled together and enjoying each other's company,
"Papa, when is Daddy coming home?" Jisung asked and Taeyong looked at the boy with a pang in his chest,
"Soon baby, very soon," he replied, but the truth is that he really didn't know when Jaehyun would be coming back. He'd been gone for 7 months now and they only got to video chat a couple times a month.
Taeyong picked Jisung up from the bed and carried him into the Kitchen,
"Do you want to help Papa make breakfast?" He asked his son and the boy replied with a very excited nod. Taeyong got the pans and ingredients out to make pancakes while his toddler sat in his chair. Taeyong looked over at the boy who was staring in amazement at how fast his father was cooking,
"Papa, up!" the boy said holding his arms up. Taeyong only chuckled and picked him up, setting him on to his hip. They continued cooking with each other occasionally with Jisung reaching forward to touch the bowl where the pancake batter was. Once the pancakes were done, Taeyong set Jisung in his chair while he got the serving plates and juice ready for them.
After breakfast Taeyong got Jisung dressed in a striped blue shirt, overalls, and a pair of converse. Jisung sat patiently on his parent's bed playing with his stuffed animals while his father got ready for the day. Taeyong dressed in a pair of ripped jeans and one on Jaehyun's shirts. Taeyong cooed at how cute Jisung looked,
"Ready to go, buddy?" He asked his son,
"Yes, Papa." The toddler replied and took his father's hand
The two made their way to the car where Taeyong strapped Jisung into his car seat. He then went over to the driver's side and started the car. The two were going to the dance studio where Taeyong taught a dance class every Saturday. Once they arrived at the studio, Taeyong carried Jisung into the building where his students were waiting. After an hour of teaching Taeyong sent his students on their way.
"Jisungie, are you ready to go?" Taeyong called out and the toddler looked up from his iPad. He nodded his head and got up from his spot. Taeyong took his hand and they walked out to the car.
"Papa, I'm hungry," Jisung whined,
"I know, baby. We are going to Uncle Mark and Donghyuk's for lunch. It's going to take a little while to get there, so why don't you close your eyes for a while?" Taeyong suggested
"But Papa I'm not tired," Jisung said,
"Just try to close your eyes," Taeyong replied,
After about 10 minutes Jisung was asleep. His little head was tilted to the side and his mouth was partially open. Taeyong smiled and turned on the radio, singing softly to himself. Finally, after about an hour, they arrived at Mark and Donghyuk's house. Taeyong made his was over to Jisung's side and unbuckled the toddler who was still asleep. He carefully picked him up, making sure not to wake the toddler. Making his was up the stairs he rang the doorbell to Mark and Donghyuk's house. Both men opened the door, but Taeyong shushed them not wanting to wake his baby.
After Jisung was set up on the couch, the three went into the kitchen where Donghyuk was making lunch.
"How's everything?" Asked Mark while taking a sip of his drink,
"Good, it's rough without Jaehyun, but we're getting through." Taeyong replied,
"He's been gone 7 months?" Asked Donghyuck,
Taeyong nodded and without even realizing that tears were forming in his eyes.
"Hey, don't cry. I'm sure he'll be back soon." Mark reassured him.
"I know and it's stupid of me to cry, but I just miss him so much. Jisung has been asking about him too and I tell him that Jaehyun is coming back soon but I don't know if he is going to come home." Taeyong choked out,
"Jaehyun is going to come home. He always does right?" Donghyuk asked,
"Yeah, but this is the longest he's been away." Taeyong said wiping his eyes,
"It's going to be ok. Trust me." Donghyuk said rubbing the older's back.
