"So we have a deal?" I mumbled as clear as I could through the cloth over my mouth. It was a hijab that I had to wear for protection while working undercover in Iran.

"Review the terms again." He waved his hand in a disrespectful and disinterested way. It irked me to be honest. The ruler, the leader of his own country sitting, on a high, diamond-encrusted throne while his people were excluded, tossed out, and forced to deal with the 40 thieves alone. But god forbid someone stole the sultan's lamp.

"I am to go into the Den of the 40 Thieves and retrieve your stolen lamp. If I come back with the lamp I am rewarded and promptly put out of your hair. If it is a fraud, or I fail to comply, then I shall accept whatever consequences you see fit. Are we agreeing?" I spoke in my most professional, not annoyed voice.

"Yes." He sighed reluctantly.

I fought the angry twitch in my eye.

"Then it is settled. I do ask that you provide me all I need to ensure this task is completed, that way I will be able to retrieve your lamp as soon as possible."

"Here.." He took off his crown and popped the green jewel out of the front. "This is the last of my fortune, my family's jewels. I trust that you will trade them wisely in the market and bring my lamp back to me."

"Thank you." I bowed and left his palace, being escorted by a few guards for safety.

Once we made it to the marketplace, or what little there was left after the place had been looted and ransacked, I took a good look around at all my options. There were only three traders left one with a telescope, one with wraps and cloths and one with a camel.

I went over to the woman selling wraps and asked her to trade in her native language. She agreed and placed a couple of beautiful spools of cloth on one side of the table. It was now my turn to put down something of value to her.

I cleverly hid the jewel in my bag before I came to the marketplace. If they saw it, they would only trade for the jewel.

I opened my purse and gave her about 700 Iranian Rial, which was equivalent to about 20 US dollars. She agreed to the trade. When I had the cloth I made my way to the merchant with telescopes and such.

I put the cloth on the table because it was the only thing I wanted to trade. He immediately told me,
"I have no interest in this item."

I gave him a tight-lipped smile to which he replied with a toothless grin. I fished around until I felt the last of my roti from my last excursion in India. He eyed it like it was something he might want. But when I pulled out the bread, the jewel fell out too with a soft thud into the sand.

Quickly, I tried to pick it up but it had caught the sun's glare and his attention as well.

"Ah.. that, yes I will trade for that only."
