"Will I just heard." Natalie said bursting into the ED with Owen on her hip.

His eyes were red and blotchy from crying, his hands shook with the fear of knowing his baby brother tried to take his precious life away. A life that he loved so much, he couldn't loose it not now not ever. He had already lost their mother. Though when she died it was harder on Jay then it was on him.

"Hey mom I brought you roses, I know they're your favourite." Jay beamed smiling down at the woman who birthed him. Her brown eyes sparkled with joy, seeing her son brought her so much joy. Her long red hair gone, her bald head hidden from the only eyes that bothered to look  at her, his eyes.

"Hey baby boy," she said returning the smile. "How are you baby?" She asked gently placing her frail hand on his.

"I'm good mom don't worry about me, how are you feeling?"

"Like shit," she responded chuckling at her sons surprised expression. "Baby I'm dying, I'm allowed to swear." She said bursting out into a fit of laughter, Jay stood in awe of the happy woman he saw in front of him.

"Love you mom."

"I love you too baby boy. Now come lay down with me." She said shimmying to the side and allowing her still scrawny like son to lay beside her. He wrapped his arms around her tiny body. The chemo had eroded it away, little by little he watched his mother fade away.

"I didn't see how much pain he was in." Will cried into Natalie's shoulder, his tears cascading the white lab coat.

"Will nobody saw it,"

"It's just when my mom died he was really depressed and everyone saw it. He joined the rangers right away but everyone knew how much pain he was in, you could see it clear as day.

"You know I can never believe that I made you." She said stoking the auburn hair out of his face. "I mean you are so unlike your dad sometimes I wonder if you're even his." She chuckled stopping when the pain of laughing was to much for her to handle.

"So there's a chance?" Jay asked remind with the thought that he might not be related to the tyrant he called dad.

"Nope, sorry baby I'm not exactly the cheating type." She responded smiling, though it was difficult.

"That's okay, at least I'm related to you." He joked pulling his mother into a hug.

"Make sure you follow your dreams baby boy."

"Mom?"

"No really stop joking around for a second and listen," she said threateningly looking him dead in the eyes. "I want you to follow your dreams. Chase bad guys, save the world. At least that's what you said you wanted to when you were 4."

"I will, one day mom I swear."

"Good, also find a girl who who loves you for you, don't ever change yourself, I love you for you. And Jay Patrick Halstead I swear to god If you get someone knocked up before you're married I will come back to life and castrate you myself. Is that understood?"

He looked like a deer in the headlights at what his usually well mannered mother had just said to him. "Okay?" He said shakily.

"And if it's multiples I'll even do it while you're awake." She whispered onto his hair almost petting it as she sat up in the hospital bed.

"I love you mom"

"I love you t......"

Though life is strong and resilient it always comes to an end. An end which brings pain and misery to the people who loved them. Jay loved his mother. When she died a piece of his heart died with her.
