Warning: this is a steamy/erotic romance that contains descriptions of sexual activity.

Flashing lights through the trees, the pop of cop radios clicking on and off, the rumble of the fire engine... a normal greeting as Brit walked onto the property of the Bella Villa apartments. She was pretty sure Bella meant "beautiful," she just wasn't sure that this qualified. Other kids, mostly younger than her, were getting off of the bus. No one seemed phased by the presence of emergency vehicles or cops.

The scene quieted down some as the Ambulance and Fire Engine left the scene. The presence of both probably meant someone had called 911. But that didn't mean much, here.

"Miss! Excuse me, miss!" A cop blurted.

It took a moment for Brit to realize he was talking to her.

"You can't cross the yellow tape!" The cop half shouted. Brit cocked her head as if to say, "really?"

"Sir, my apartment is through there," Brit responded matter-of-factly.

"Look, the Detective will be out in a minute. Hang on a second?" The cop asked. Brit sighed, "okay."

"Hey! Get outta the car!" The cop turned and walked towards the squad car. The squeal of the car's loudspeaker clicked on and off as a couple of young neighborhood boys played with it.

Brit shook her head, lifted the tape and walked up the stairs to the second floor. She passed apartments where she heard television shows blaring or couples shouting. Clearly, the yellow tape hadn't meant much.

It was the quiet, the absence of the noise people make, that first alerted Brit. When she turned the last corner, she was greeted by a door that had been bashed in, the door frame cracked, and yellow tape across the entrance. Apartment 223. Her apartment... silence.

If police had been there, her mom shouting, her mom's boyfriend of the week bellowing, dishes crashing, she would've just continued on and head straight to her room. But, silence? Brit took a breath and ducked under the tape.

The coffee table was overturned, a glass or two on the floor. She smelled fire, but, didn't see any signs of one. The oven was still on. A frozen pizza was just beginning to burn. Whatever had happened, had happened quickly. Brit clicked the oven off and set the pizza on a nearby counter.

"What are you doing in here?" a man with a deep voice asked.

Brit turned, "This is my apartment."

"Well, you can't be here."

"What happened? Where are..."

"They're safe. Your mom and sister are safe."

"Sister?" Brit asked.

"Yeah - CPS. Your mom's downtown, her boyfriend is... "

Bang! Bang!

The radio chatter picked up and the detective motioned for Brit to stay here, as he ran out. Brit looked at the door... it was beyond repair... like hell she was going to stay here tonight. She ran to her room, shook her school books out of her backpack and replaced them with a few things, then shoved a handful of diapers, wipes, and Sarah's favorite stuffed animal into it. She ran to the kitchen... there wasn't much. She grabbed half a box of crackers and ran, going around the back of the building to avoid being caught up in whatever was happening now.
