Spoiler Alert: "Sugar" takes place before the events of "Summer Vacation," but this Epilogue takes place many years after the events of "Summer Vacation." If you wish to read both in chronological order, read "Summer Vacation," and then return to this chapter. :)
Twelve years later...
Brit looked at Sarah, she looked so much like herself at her age, eating with some of her friends at Giovanni's. Tonight she wasn't waiting tables... or anything else. She was celebrating Sarah's graduation. She had been accepted to a prestigious college and offered a full ride, not that she needed it.
Brit smiled. She knew she looked older than her years, but she didn't care. She knew she had missed her opportunity for college... possibly for a real career in business. But, she didn't care. She beat the system. She had been through hell and back... she had persevered through her school years, abuse, her broken family, gained a job, saved money, invested, and kept her eyes on the prize. She had locked the part of her that yearned for freedom away. She had become what she needed to become. But that was over.
"Is it true?" Tom asked. She hadn't noticed the grey in his hair until today.
"Yes, I quit," Brit replied.
"No... well, I knew that day would come... eventually. I mean, are you leaving?" Tom asked.
Brit had nothing here in this town for her. After she played the game the state had required of her and finally won back Sarah, she felt it would be cruel to remove her from her friends. Brit wanted the security for Sarah she had never had. But, now that she was moving on to college, there was nothing here for her.
Brit sighed.
"I just never really thought..." Tom's eyes wandered off.
"Tom, I don't want this life anymore, this town." Brit responded.
"What about..." Tom started.
Brit looked at him... hard. Then, she saw something she hadn't seen in years. There, deep in his eyes was the man she had crushed on when she was still in High School. The man that had made out with her, not demanding a thing... not her master... not a major source of unreported income... the man that had saved her from those boys behind the school.
But, that was a very long time ago, now. How many young girls.. and their mothers... had she watched Tom fuck? How many guys had she fucked... been "ordered" to please?
There was a lot of baggage here... and she didn't know if she could... or even wanted to... deal with it.
Sarah and her friends giggled as they chatted about boys and college and left the table. Brit smiled. Sarah got the life she had wanted... and nothing pleased her more. Now it was time for her to claim her own life.
"Tom, I'm leaving... tonight. And, I'm not coming back," Brit said.
Tom looked at her for a full minute.
Then, Brit laughed.
"I tell you what, if you're ever in New York, look me up," Brit winked.
"Okay, Brit," Tom said heavily.
"But, it won't be Brit. You can call me Mistress," Brit turned and walked away.
She was pretty sure she heard Tom speaking to someone on the phone as she left, "nope, sell it all... I'm done... " and something about, "retirement," but she didn't care.
The door clicked behind Brit and she took a deep breath. Yes, it was definitely time for new beginnings.
Thank you for reading "Sugar."
This was a hard story for me to write. I prefer to deal with heroines that don't put up with quite as much as Brit. But, I felt that Brit deserved her own story... to overcome the odds.
To everyone who has dealt with abuse and overcome it, bravo! And, to those who suffer with it every day, I wish you strength.
Sincerely,
Sally Skye
