Charlie Ilia Bartowski, or more commonly known as Chuck, hadn't planned to kiss the Major John Casey. But she was running out of options to save his life when the idea popped into her head. It was a sliver of hope to save Casey's life that had rushed to mind, so she acted on it.
"I have served my country with honor and loyalty, Chuck," Casey rasped, his eyes foggy as he struggled to speak, "Please, let me die with dignity.
Chuck froze.
It took a few seconds for her brain to catch up with her ears. Finally, as Casey's plead processed, Chuck fell back on her heels, missing the look of surprise that danced across the dying man's face. As if he too was surprised he had said such a thing.
"Well," Chuck began as she gulped thickly, "I guess that answers that question." She said soft and shakily as her palms began to get clammy, shoulders tense. Her eyes glazed and brimmed with tears, understandably.
Of course, there never really was a "question" to begin with. She was fine with being single.
Though that doesn't mean she had been blind to Casey. In fact, it was quite the opposite. But for Casey to insult her in such a way... For him to say that, if he survived, there would be no chance for them, ever, as a couple... It was like a punch in the gut to the young girl.
She was already insecure about herself. Her personality, her looks, her abilities, or lack thereof, always made her feel and think there was something left to be desired. That she could be better, but couldn't quite get there.
But of course she thought Casey was handsome. His piercing blue-green eyes that, more often than not, made her squirm for unadmitable reasons. His strong, sharp, and square jaw with the slight stubble. His broad shoulders that, even though Chuck was only a few inches shorter, made her feel like an ant in the sight of a giant. His ripped abs that were torturously, for Chuck anyway, defined by the tight green Buy More shirt.
In other words, Chuck thought Casey was hot.
But those weren't the thoughts running through her head at that moment. No. It was the hurt and pressure she harbored, as well as the survival of her colleague.
So, when Chuck turned and slammed her lips into Casey's, she wasn't bringing her skills to the table, though she doubted she had any.
Casey was caught off guard by the sudden force of the kiss. Not expecting it, his mouth was open to her as she ravaged the taste of him and tried to remember it forever, because she expected she'd die from his rage before she got another chance.
Casey was slightly impressed by how good of a kisser she was.
When Chuck kissed Casey, she put only a sliver of what she had bottled up for the past year plus. But that was still enough to knock over the usually immovable John Casey.
His apparent rejection only made her realize that she cared for the man.
And then Jillian arrived. Now Chuck had to explain her reasoning to him.
Shit.
