I stood by your side
the whole night.
we both knew it was time to go
but I wanted you to stay.
I remember
being a young girl
and playing with your tangly beard.
I remember
you sneaking me candy before I ate my meal
I remember all your joke and your big loving hugs
and I remember
the night
you left.
I held your hand
a year rolling
down
my cheek.
I told you
you could let go
because I knew it was time
but I just
wished
it wasn't.
and then
you did.
you let go.
I was glad
but
I was sad.
I kissed your hand
and whispered
quietly
as the tears
silently slithered down my nose
"i love you, grandpa."
and I let go.
