Nick-
Scott has been ignoring everyone of my texts and Grant has been replying to mine late; like three hours late. The baseball game is in an hour and I'm contemplating if I should even go. I sighed and tossed my phone on the bed. How could Grant go from being totally into me, then wanting nothing to do with me in seconds?
My room door slowly opened, Melinda creeped her head in and smiled. "Hey honey, you about ready to go? It's a long drive."
"Yeah, I guess." I grabbed a hat, following my mom out to the car. The drive was pretty silent but then Melinda broke the ice.
"Nick are you okay?" I sighed and wiggled around in the passenger seat. "I'm not sure to be quite honest."
"Well what's wrong? You seemed to be in a really good mood earlier, like you found a guy that you were into. That's amazing, for a second me and your mother thought you might be-" I quickly cut her off.
"It's not like that, I did kinda find a guy but he likes Scott instead, or at least now he does."
"Aw sweetie, that sucks. You saw that gorgeous guy first."
"I had him, I really did, but I guess I gave him the wrong signs or something." I want to talk about how I feel without outing myself. I tell my moms everything, but being straight isn't something you talk about when you're the only straight.
"So Scott took him away from you? That doesn't seem like a best friend to me."
"I told Scott I didn't like the kid, I told him he could have him, because I didn't think I really wanted to have anything to do with the guy. Now & think I do want to be with this guy."
"Then tell him, don't let him slip through your fingers, you know in college I did everything in my power to get Karen and I got her, so go get the kid tiger."
"I can't mom, Scott would hate me forever and Grants not even texting me back, so it's useless."
"That's true, don't lose your best friend over a guy, I do believe in go after what you want but friends are more important. Don't beat yourself up, there's other guys out there." Hopefully there's a straight girl out there instead.
The rest of the ride was mostly silent, Melinda sang to every song on the radio out of key, but who am I to judge, I can't sing either.
I arrived to the field and I was really early. Melinda asked if I wanted to wait in the car with her until the guys got here but I declined. I kinda want some alone time before I'm third wheeled the whole hour and a half. I leaned back on the fence. The players were practicing pitching and swinging before the game started. I Sent a text to both Grant and Scott, asking if they were already here, didn't get a response, as I expected. A few minutes went by and a guy approached me.
He was equally beautiful as Grant. He must be his cousin. "Hey, I'm Edward, Grant's cousin." He extended his arm out and I shook it.
"Nice to meet you I'm -" the kid didn't even let me introduce myself. "I know who you are."
"You do?" I asked. "Yeah, Grant has been talking about you a lot lately."
"What? Really?" The corner of my lip quivered into a smile. He's been thinking about me and talking about me. Wow.
"Yeah it's been Scott this, Scott that."
"Huh? Wait did you say Scott?"
"Yeah, isn't that your name?"
"No, I'm Nick, I showed Grant around the school, well sorta."
"Oh, yeah, he hasn't mentioned you at all, sorry."
"Hmm, I figured." I felt like leaving my own body; letting my spirits run free while I sat and watched this stupid game go on. I don't even like watching sports. I rather be doing anything than sitting and watching a group of people around around a field, hitting shit.
"Well it was nice to meeting you Nick, I have to go back to practicing." Even the cousin doesn't want to be around me. "Oh, Nick you've made it," Scott groaned, rolling his uneven, bulging fish looking brown eyes at me. Scott isn't even slightly attractive, I don't know what Grant even sees in him.
"Yeah, wish I didn't though." Replying with a mumble.
I dragged my torn up black hightop converse in the tough dirt, as I followed Grant and Scott towards the entrance.
The game hasn't started yet and I already want to leave, like right now. The concessions stands were open and all the early audience people stood in line, buying goodies before it got too crowded.
I was being ignored, as usual. I observed my surroundings. The light green grass was cut short. One of the baseball coaches swept away the dirt on the bases. Another coach was giving his team a pep talk before the big game. I've never been a fan of baseball, being outside in the heat, watching a couple guys throwing and hitting a ball wasn't my thing.
"Hey, Nick why don't you go over to the concession stand and buy us some hot dogs, yeah?" Grant waved a ten dollar bill in my face. I sighed deeply and stared at his stupid little cute smirk that was plastered on his face. "Go on Nick!" Scott nudged me. "Fine, I'll be back," I got up, snatching the money from Grants grip and went over to the stand.
I wish I didn't, but I did, I looked back over at Scott and Grant. They were cuddled up and Grant was tugging on Scott's earlobe. I saw his eye shoot back at me, he was doing this on purpose. He doesn't like Scott, he's just using him. I feel bad for Scott though, when he falls for someone, he falls hard, but I am kind of happy that he is using Scott. That'll teach his ass not to betray his best friend for a stupid attractive boy.
I ordered the dogs and got me some popcorn. When I got back to the guys, my seat was taken by some large guy with Cheeto stains on his half ripped white tank top.
"Excuse me, I was sitting here," the man glanced at me, "the young fellas next to me said that the seat wasn't taken." He then turned his attention back to the already started game.
"Where the fuck am I suppose to sit then?" Scott shrugged and took his hot dog from my hand, shoving it into his mouth, getting condiments on the corner of his lips. Grant wiped the ketchup off and licked it off of his finger.
I had it. I know he's just messing with me, but I'm done. I'm not going to let some fuck get to me. I'm not even gay! I guess that's what pretty people do to you. They make you think you're into them when you're really not! I dropped the popcorn and Grants hot dog and walked off. I didn't want to come anyways. I don't want to watch my friend get used, nor do I want to feel any type of jealously.
"Whoa, drama queen!" Scott shouted. "Hahahahah he's so sensitive."
"Yeah..." Grant replied.
