Oh crap, the power is out again! Shouted my mother.

Darkness consumed every room in our two bedroom, humble abode. While my mother was exclaiming that this the end of the world, I observed how calm the darkness was. My meditation state was interrupted with a touch from my mother, she ordered, honey, can you please go to the convenience store and buy some flashlights, or candles?

But thats all the way across town and its already dark outside, why not enjoy the quiet? I pleaded.

Im telling you to do something, dont argue with me.

She settled the argument quickly, I had been defeated. I picked myself up out of my chair and grabbed the keys to my car.

I used the flashlight from my phone to light the way to my beaten up Acura. I slid the key into the ignition, nothing. I tried again, but still, nothing. With great frustration I picked up my phone and dialed Nevadas number. Are you busy at the moment? I have a case of a hysterical mother in need of candles and my car decided to hate me.

Im just sitting at home. Ill be right over. Nevada said.

Minutes later, Nevadas headlights blinded me as he pulled into the driveway. Ta-da! Here to your rescue. He said as he gave a bow.

I hopped into his newly purchased Subaru and gave him a smile. I noticed Nevada smelled of cologne, something out of character for him. I know our town isnt too big, but I didnt want to walk in the dark, I explained.

Its no problem. He said with a smile.

I had never noticed that Nevadas smile was slightly crooked, but his flashy white teeth made up for it. I stopped myself from thinking he was attractive, we were too close of friends to let that happen. Nevada slowly stopped the car at a stop sign, the streets were vacant as we were the only car on the road. Ive been meaning to tell you something, Nevada said.

What is it. I blatantly said.

Weve been friends for a long time and have known each other for even longer, but I want to take it farther.

Nevada reached over, trying to kiss me. My survival instincts kicked in and I opened the car door and bolted as fast as humanly possible. I didnt look behind me to see Nevadas reaction. Still running, I saw the convenience store about a block away. I mustve heavily damaged Nevadas pride because his headlights were nowhere to be seen. Sometime during the incident, my shoelace had become untied, being the human wrecking-ball I am, I tripped. Blood stained my light colored jeans. Just what I need, I thought.

Finally reaching my destination, I purchased three flashlights, batteries, and a twelve pack of candles. Is everything okay, Miss? Asked the cashier.

Is anything ever okay when the power goes out?
