Nobody would enjoy being so cold you turn blue. Shivering so hard that you're surprised that your bones haven't shattered yet. Could you imagine such a torture? Sammy couldn't. Sammy was a kid who only cared if she got her food, books, Netflix, and her bed. You couldn't beg her to care for anything or about anyone unless it was a fictional character. But the look in the little girls teary eyes yanked at Sammy's heart strings. The little girl laid on the side of the road shivered furiously. Her hair was matted and her clothes were in shreds. Upon seeing the small girl on the side of the road Sammy's father slammed the brakes causing all the children in the car to jerk forward. Next to Sammy was her older brother Micheal who's eyes were wide with soul crushing sympathy for the girl who looked so helpless.
Running out of the car first was Sammy's mother Jenna. Jenna had always been a kind soul but tough skinned and unapproachable on the outside. Jenna's demeanor changed immediately upon seeing the hopeless child who seemed she would burst into tears in any second.
"Micheal get the blankets!" Jenna yelled frantically. It was her motherly instinct to care for children especially when they were hurt. Micheal however seemed shocked and frozen. Sammy shook her head he was just as slow as always, she couldn't believe he was the one who had to watch her when their parents were away. If something happened to her she wondered if he'd freeze up like he was now. She was better off taking care of herself after all she was thirteen. Sammy quickly snatched the blankets from the back and prepared to hurry to freezing little girl when Micheal suddenly snapped out of his daze.
"Hey mom asked me to bring the blankets!"
" Well you were being a bigger idiot then usual and froze! It doesn't matter who brings them stupid!" With that Sammy hurried over to the small girl who her mother trying to comfort.
"Thanks Sammy." Her mother said in an exhausted voice. Sammy's dad Arnold was on the phone with the police station pacing back and forward running his hands through the little hair he had left. He was stressed and confused which was understandable since none of his children had anything close to this at all. He had no idea why the girl was on the side of the road. Where she came from. Or how long she had been suffering in the freezing weather or in general.
Sammy stood there looking at the girl trying so hard to read the emotions in the little girls eyes like she'd read about in so many books. But all she could see was fear and pain. The little girls eyes glistened in the moonlight with tears. Her bright blue orbs were so piercing and held so much emotion that it could stab the soul with sorrow from deep within you. Her eyes showed the soul what true pain and torture was. The emotions hit Sammy like a truck as she pried her own dark brown eyes away from the little girls.
"Can you tell us your name sweetie?" Jenna asked the young girl. The girl didn't reply she just stared into Jenna's eyes as though they could speak for her. It was a cruel action to inflict her heart wrenching emotions on someone else who didn't want them. All Sammy wanted to do was go home, get in bed, watch Netflix and forget she had loads of homework to do. Now all Sammy wanted to was go home and cry for the little girl. Sammy wondered when she had become a such a crybaby and decided that it was books who made her weak.
"Do you know where you live?" Jenna tried again. But the little girl wouldn't speak. She just kept looking at Jenna as though she was peering into her soul. Sammy as selfish as it was wanted to forget the little girl existed because she knew she wouldn't be able to do what she wanted and forget about caring about the little things in life: caring about people, what they think, and how they feel. Sammy would go home with her heart heavy with sympathy. Sammy had learned from years of torture from her peers that people couldn't be trusted with feelings or trusted at all. She had successfully made herself invisible from everyone by staying to herself and not trying to make friends. This little girl was someone who Sammy wanted to put effort into and she looked like she could use a friend.
Micheal stayed away from the girl like she the plague when she got into the car. The car was silent and they only thing to be heard was the sound of music from Britney's headphones. She was fast asleep during all of the panic from our mother and was still asleep now with her headphones rattling her helpless eardrums and brain. The decided to take the little girl home with them for the night and take her by the police station in the morning. When they all arrived home Jenna tried asking the girl a few questions again but was met with silence.
"She takes the whole not talking to strangers thing way to serious." Britney scoffed under her breath. She had to be the snobbiest fifteen year old Sammy had ever met. Always having her head filled with praises from their parents for doing simple things. From Sammy's observation of the situation Britney could simply stand up and walk and still get praised like she was some toddler or something. Being the youngest and adopted Sammy had always felt less important than her parents 'real' children, but she dealt with marking it off as: that's just life. Ignoring her sister and hauling her tired body up the stairs Sammy prepared to put great use to one of the things she loved more than anything and anyone: her bed.
The little girl was in the room directly across from Sammy and Sammy wondered if the girl was comfortable.
"Of course she isn't comfortable stupid she's in a house of strangers and she's seen your face." Sammy muttered to herself. Nonetheless Sammy made her way the little girl's room to be met with eyes that looked as though their only purpose was to inflict pain. The two girls stared at each other until the little girl stepped forward. Turning around the little girl pushed aside the fabric of the small shirt she was wearing over her shoulder. A gasp left Sammy's mouth because there scarred into the little girl's shoulder was a name.
