Chapter 1- Finding Out

"Mom, I'm going to Hannah's!" I yelled as I was running downstairs to my best friend, Hannah Watson's house.

"Alright, but be back by 7:30!" she yelled back from her room.

"Okay, love you!" and I was off!

"Hello," Hannah's mom, Jill answered.

"Hi Mrs. Watson, is Hannah there?" I replied, wondering where she was since Hannah usually answers the door when I come.

"No honey she's out with her dad fishing, but hopefully she'll be back soon," Jill said, her brown eyes narrow, and sweat dripping down her neck. Jill is never scared. This is starting to freak me out.

"What do you mean hopefully? Is she okay? Where is she? Are you okay?" I asked, curious to what was wrong! Even though Hannah was my best friend she didn't tell me everything. Which kind of annoyed me sometimes...

"Oh, we're ok. I'm just a little paranoid. I mean her dad took her to the bad..." the telephone started to ring, "Oh, let me get that!" she ran off before I could say another word. I didn't know what to do so I invited myself in, as I usually do.

"NO! NO!" she started yelling, she was angry, sad, and depressed. What could be happening?!

"What's the matter?!" I asked, maybe a little too harsh, but I was afraid.

"Regan, that was your mom, you should go home," she cried. That's when I knew she was lying, but I didn't want to keep bothering her, so I did what anyone would do when they have no freaking idea what's happening, I called the last known number on her phone. She was still sobbing and I doubt she noticed until I said, "hello."

"Hello?" a voice way to familiar answered.

"Who is this? Is this Hannah's dad?" I asked.

"Yes, and who is this?" he asked, obviously scared, but he was also crying!

"This is Regan, Hannah's best friend. Hannah's mom is crying, you're crying, and I have no idea what is going on!"

"Okay, you need to hear this from your mom. So go home, please, this is hard for all of us," he said.

"Okay," I said as I hung up the phone and ran down the driveway. That was it! I'm so curious! Why won't anyone explain anything to me? I had to get home and ask my mom. Hopefully Hannah was okay. I was running very fast and couldn't wait to see what happened. Hopefully it wasn't anything bad...

When I got back to my house, as I expected Mrs. Watson had called my mom, and was still sobbing!

"Omigosh! Really? I'm so sorry! No, I'll tell Regan. You take care of yourself as well as Jake. Okay, good bye," I overheard my mom say. Tell me what? I was so confused!

"Mom, what's going on?" I asked, my blue eyes worried, blonde hair raffled, and sweating from the way down.

"Regan, do you remember when Mrs. Watson told you Hannah was fishing with her dad on the bad side of town?" so that's what Mrs. Watson meant by bad..., but still that doesn't help anything come together!

"Yes, please go on," I replied. I was so anxious I thought I was going to die!

"This is so hard for me to tell you," my mom hesitated, but luckily she went on, "Hannah, well, she got shot when she was there," my mom tried to stay calm, but she started to tear up.

WHAT? I thought. I couldn't believe this!

"No! That's not true! She's not dead! No!" I was sobbing my eyes out!
