a/n: This is the Soulmate AU thingy where you're colourblind until you find your soulmate, and your vision becomes black and white again when they die. It's also human AU.
Tw: character death; suicide. Yep, there's angst. You've been warned. Don't like? Don't read! And this isn't really from a specific point of view?? So yeah-

Patton had always been a cheerful fellow. He always seemed to find the good in everything.
Well, everything besides the fact he couldn't see colour. It pained him to know there was a whole world that was seen in a different light by some. A world he feared he would never see.
In order for him to see these colours he had only ever heard tell of, he had to find his soulmate. Something he doubted he would ever do.
---------------------------

Roman was rather cheerful as well, but preferred not to dwell on the fact he couldn't see colour like Patton did. Sure, it bothered him a bit, but there were more important things to focus on, like his acting career. He wanted to become a famous performer more than anything. He aspired to become a well-known actor and someday perform on Broadway. But for the time being he was stuck in his dead-end job as a coffee shop barista (a/n: leave me be).

Roman had willingly taken the night shift tonight. He knew he would have been up all night anyway, due to the fact his mind would never shut up. This was the first time he had ever worked night shift, so he wasn't sure what to expect.
The shop stayed vacant for the most part, with an occasional college student passing through, complaining about the inability to sleep, overdue assignments, distracting roommates, What have you. Roman did his best to ignore them while they were in there.
---------------------------
Patton rolled over in his bed. God, why couldn't he just fall asleep? He was exhausted, but couldn't even stay still for five minutes. He was restless. He sat up.
Can't fall asleep, so might as well get something to try to make himself less tired.
He stood up, walking over to the corner of his bedroom and slipping his shoes on. Then he grabbed the key to his apartment as well as is wallet, and stepped out, locking the door behind him.
It was a warm night, so he was in no need of a jacket. He was in simple attire; a short sleeved t-shirt and sweatpants.
He set off to the coffee shop.
--------------------------
Roman tapped a pen on the counter. Ah, bored.
Bored, bored, bored.
He started to tap the pen in a sort of rhythm, then found himself humming. He wasn't loud, but it's not as though it mattered. There was nobody for him to be disturbing there.
After a while, his humming turned into singing.
"You say our love is draining, and you can't go on~"
He grinned proudly as he hit that note. Not exactly an easy feat for an adult male.
"You'll be the one complaining when I am gone!"
He stood up straight.
"And no, don't change the subject! 'Cause you're my favourite subject! My sweet, submissive subje-"
The bell at the top of the door rang, signaling someone had entered the building, causing him to stop his singing immediately.
---------------------------
Patton opened the door to the coffee shop, seeing it was completely deserted besides one individual, being the barista. He walked over to the counter.
"Good evening." Roman stated. "How are you tonight?"

Patton laughed to himself. "Tired." He murmured. "And you?"

"I can't say the same. I've been a bit bored, but not exactly tired." Roman chuckled.

"I know." Patton said with a smile. "I heard you singing before I walked in. Your voice is excellent, by the way."

Roman cleared his throat. "NUm, what'll it be tonight, sir?"

"A large caramel macchiato." Patton said instantly. The same thing he got every time he came here during the late hours of the night, which was rather often.
