"Clara?"
I snapped out of my reverie and was suprised to find that I had wandered away from the bus stop. I must have been pacing as I pondered my possible lunacy.
"Clara!"
"WHAT?!"
Katherine and Kathleen had followed me as I wandered. It figures. They were my best friends, and here I was ignoring them and actually yelling! They must be wondering what was wrong.
"Clara? What's wrong with you today?"
Katherine asked much more timidly than usual. Great, now I'd scared her. Sighing, I reluctantly turned around. I saw that only Katherine had followed me which was strange. Usually, they never left eachother's side. Her face looked shaked and frightened. She was standing there uncertainly which was rare in itself. She was usually the most outspoken and brave of our little group.Stupidly, I replied,
"It's nothing, Katherine. Not important."
If she hadn't know before that something was wrong than she would now. We hadn't kept a secret from eachother since 3rd grade and even then there were circumstances. Maybe I should tell her. She could have an idea of what was happening to me. My mind made up I said hesitantly,
"Please don't think I'm crazy when I tell you this."
The fact that I was opening up seemed to relax her, and her face grew more hopeful and less wary. She took a step closer and put a reassuring hand on my shoulder.
"Of course I won't think you're crazy. You're the only person I know who is even remotely sane."
At that I almost laughed out loud. If that was what she thought now, then it was even more likely that she would want to put me in a mental institution afterwards. But I had made my descision, and she deserved to know.
"Even so. Are you sure you don't see a storm?"
"Yes Clara, I am absolutely, positively sure, that there is not a cloud in the sky."
I groaned. I would have to explain after all.
"Here goes. This morning I woke up and there was this monstrous storm cloud outside my window. It was so dark outside that I could see my reflection in the glass. Black hair, one green eye, one brown, I could even see my scar. It was mesmerizing and I couldn't tear my eyes away. Then my mom called me and I went downstairs, ate breakfast, you know, the usual. But the odd thing was, when I left, my mom didn't offer to drive me. Then I got to the bus stop, and you told me that there was no storm. I didn't know what to think!"
Instead of looking shocked like I had expected, Katherine grinned excitedly. For a few seconds she seemed shocked and couldn't speak. Then it was as if a dam broke.
"Oh my GOD Clara! That is not a common hallucination! And the last person who had their first hallucination be like that.....Do you know what happened?"
Stifling a giggle I replied,
"No I don't. And that might have been the most confusing sentence I've ever heard."
She rolled her eyes.
"You know what I mean. The last person to have that hallucination was put in an insane asylum."
"That's encouraging" I said dryly.
"No, listen! A day later a storm cloud just like you described appeared in the area. When the doctors went to release the poor girl she was gone!"
I groaned. This was why she was so excited. She had decided to be a pshychiatrist when she grew up. With anyone else as young as she was when she had decided, they would have changed their minds million of times before now. But not Katherine. Oh no. Instead, she had immediately gone all fanatic and researched every single case of lunacy that the world had ever had. And she had memorized it too. It was more than a little creepy. So if she said it I believed her. Not that I was happy about it.
" Are you saying that this might not be a hallucination? That it could be a......vision?
"Exactly. Come on, let's go tell Kathleen."
At that she grabbed my arm and pulled me behind her as she ran back to the bus. We got a couple of odd looks from the croud that had assembled to wait for the bus, but for the most part they ignored us, being used to our antics.
"KATHLEEN GET OVER HERE!!!!!!!"
Kathleen looked at the people she was talking to, shrugged and ran over. So that was why she hadn't come over with Katherine. Her crush had finally deigned to talk to her.
"What is it now Katherine?"
Katherine waved her closer. Kathleen took a few more steps and stopped, waiting for us to explain what was going on. Katherine sighed, walked over and began whispering in Kathleen's ear. The expressions on her face were so extreme as to be almost comical. her eyebrows went up and up and her jaw went down and down until it almost touched the ground.
"Are you serious?"
Katherine only nodded.
