Love Conquers All

Chapter 9

Artemis sent Butler and Trouble to go scout out the area while he and Holly await the arrival of the LEP. After some arguing to confirm that everyone involved would be safe, the two in question left the room to make sure there was no one else hanging around.

Holly was the first to break the silence. "So, what she said about the potion." She began slowly.

"Yeah, about that." Artemis continued.

"It amplifies existing emotions?" It wasn't really a question.

"So she says." Silence once more.

Somehow the possibility of the unknown was worse than the certainty of nothing, thought Artemis. He wished briefly that Juniper hadn't said anything. He'd long since accepted his position but now, the doors were open once more. And he had no idea what was on the other side.

The two averted their eyes awkwardly, looking anywhere but at each other. At last, Holly spoke once more, "Is it true?"

Artemis looked up surprised, "You're asking me?"

"Well you're supposed to be the genius aren't you? I'm not very well asking Juniper." Holly snapped.

Artemis frowned, "Sorry, I'm still trying to figure it out myself, he said dismissively.

"What is there to figure out?" Holly asked, crossing her arms.

"I don't know, how did you think this was going to work out?" Artemis complained. "Give me some time here."

"So you admit you want this to work out?" Holly insisted.

"No," he said defensively, his pale skin becoming tinged with colour, "I meant hypothetically."

"Well, it's happened before," Holly said hesitantly, "With magic and whatnot. You aren't the only human to have ever befriended fairies before."

"So now you're saying you want this to work out?" Artemis shot back, doing his best to tower over her.

Holly fired up her wings and hovered at eye level to Artemis, "I don't know, maybe?" she admitted, forcefully.

Artemis took a step back, startled by Holly suddenly flying up to him. "Well then I guess I do too," he said shakily.

"Fine."

"Fine."

They paused as they suddenly realised the absurdity of their present situation. Holly dropped to her feet, "You mean it?" She said surprised.

Artemis laughed incredulously, "I guess so. There goes my heart, talking for my brain again. Jeez, this is almost worse than the love potion." He ran a hand through his hair, "That's that then."

Holly stared at him for a moment, "Yeah, I suppose."

Artemis looked away then sighed, "Okay, shouldn't it feel a bit more final than this?"

"Do you want it to be more formal?" Holly said teasingly.

"Maybe?"

"Fine, Artemis Fowl Jr. Do you want to go out with me?"

Artemis' face got even redder, "Well if you're just going to say it outright."

"It's what you wanted right? Juniper left little room for debate." Holly said annoyed.

"Okay, Officer Holly Short, I agree to go out with you."

Holly laughed, "Thank you Arty."

Sorry if these last few chapters haven't really been up to par. I sort of lost interest in this plot line and the only reason I kept writing was that I didn't want an unfinished story on my account.
