"I'm off!" I called back to my house as I race out the door. I can barely hear my mom's rants about me being late for school again as I grab my long board and ride the same route I take every day. Nothing changes much with my life; I pass the same people, see the same boring papers placed on my desk, chat with the same friends that I've known for ages now. Although I can't say that my life is boring, it is definitely repetitive. I kind of want a change of pace to happen. Something that would definitely change and make my life even more interesting than before.
"Raiden! Are you daydreaming in my class again?" my math teacher, Mr. MacBeth, yells at me for the umpteenth time. I look over to him and sigh. When will he understand that I really do not care about trigonometry and all that nonsense that I know won't be useful in my near future?
"No, absolutely not, sir," I reply sarcastically, earning a few snickers from the rest of my class. He glares at me.
"Don't be using that tone with me, young man! I know you're smart but that doesn't mean you get to slack off!" he reprimands me like every other day I have his class, "Now, where was I? Oh yes, logarithms! Here, you..." I yawn, resting my head on my desk. A poke from behind me grabs my attention. It's Anna, a girl that I've been friends with since my middle school days. She's smart and very well-liked among the student body, yet she never shows off her playful side to anyone other than me and a few other close friends who truly know her.
"You know, he's been trying to find an excuse to get you suspended, right? After the last prank you pulled earlier this year?" she whispers, giggling to herself at the memory. I smile as well; how could I forget such an awesome prank? We had just started our sophomore year at school, and I thought of it to be a good idea to spray his room with a bit of liquid ass. That caused us to cancel math class for so many months that he had to resort to sitting outside in the hallway to teach us because the smell was so bad. Plus, he couldn't keep track of all of us at once in a hallway like this, so I got to sleep or sneak away when he wasn't looking. It was amazing, and to this day no one but Anna and a few others know it was me.
"How can I possibly not notice? He's hounding on me all the time while those guys pass out on a daily basis without him saying a thing," I say casually pointing at two guys sleeping in the back. It's always been like this ever since I did that prank. Mr. MacBeth would give anything to prove that he's right about me being the prankster behind it but without much evidence to prove it I just have to suffer with his scrutiny.
"Wanna go over to the mall with me later? I'm meeting with a few other friends and thought you'd might like to come with?" Anna asked me, changing the topic.
"I'm down to go. After school?" I asked, bored out of my mind. She nodded and returned to focusing on the class. I smiled and turned t face the front again. If I am going to live another hour of this nonsense, then I might as well make sure my homework can be done.
The bell finally rang for all students to escape the great prison that was the student campus at long last. I stretched my arms and breathed in the fresh air of the weekend. Just two more weeks were left for the school year and then summer was here. As a junior, this was awesome. I was a few more months closer to being at the top of the student body social structure - the senior class. Given benefits for nearly graduating school and free to take as few hours of school as they would like, they were seen as living the good life to the rest of us underclassmen. What I would do to expedite the process of me getting there sooner. I hung around the front of the school for a little while to wait on Anna and her group of friends to kill some time before I headed home. I've been rather bored the past few days, so things like this seemed enticing to me. With both my parents away for separate business trips, the house would only be left to myself. It seems all fine and dandy until you realize just how boring it can become when you're the only one in the house. And let's not get to the topic of parties. The last time I was at a party hosted by some kid who happened to get the house to themselves for one night nearly got me arrested by the police because of the use of drugs and alcohol at a high school party. I knew for a fact that if I truly did host a party, someone who was brought by another who was invited by someone who was invited by someone else would get me in trouble the same way.
"Hey!" I hear Anna call out to me, breaking me out of my reverie. I turned towards her and wave, a smile forming on my face as I notice who was with her - three individuals I can actually say I hang out with. The first individual was Kyle, a dude in my year I knew for two years who helped me out of many embarrassing situations in the past. The second was Maya, a sophomore girl that I met who was quiet at first but was still very nice to hang out with when she isn't busy with her family affairs. Finally, there was Matthew, or Mattie for short. He was an all around cool junior who was athletic and loved everything about it. Plus, he was fun to hang out with when it came to pranks, capable of pulling them and taking them with a grain of salt.
"We good to go or what?" Mattie said, greeting me with a quick handshake.
"Yeah, let's go," Kyle chimed in, greeting me as well. Maya gave me a little nod and a smile in her way of greeting and I returned it in kind.
"Now that we have everyone, let's get going then," Anna said cheerfully.
"Um, where are we going?" Maya spoke up, her soft tone barely being heard. I looked over to Anna, who looked giddy about heading out to the mall. Something I will never understand is how most girls love shopping so much.
"There's a new place close to the mall that I wanna check out. They say that it's got great deals that you can't find anywhere else!" Anna proclaimed happily. Mattie, Kyle and I all shared a collective sigh; this was exactly what I thought was going to happen to us. The only one who didn't seem too shocked about the revelation was Maya, and she must have a really good poker face if she was surprised.
"Do you know what they sell? Or what the place is called?" Kyle asked in curiosity. The rest of us turned our heads back to Anna. Sure enough, she just smiled and pulled Maya along with her towards the direction of the mall.
"I have no idea!" She shouted back towards us in reply, dragging poor Maya with her. The rest of us remaining remained still and speechless.
"Why did I have a feeling she would say that?" Kyle asked me and Mattie. Both of us turned to one another and back to him. With that, we shared a collective sigh and went after Anna as quickly as we could without running. We were more worried about what would happen to Maya if she was left alone with Anna for too long.
