i was so excited for that night. i planned everything out a month before it, because i wanted to make sure it was perfect.

athena was my best friend, yet i always felt something different towards her- something i couldn't really express.

i've always been scared to tell her this, but only out of fear of rejection.

i was leaving the day after, and i didn't know how long it would be until i came back.

athena sat down on the blanket i laid on the grass, looking beautiful, as always. she was wearing a white dress, and had earings on.

athena wasn't wearing any sort of jacket, so she rubbed her arms. i took off my sweater immediatly, and placed it over her shoulders.

''thanks, zach.'' she mumbled. athena looked down, but i still saw her red cheeks.

it was a great night. at first, i felt awkward towards athena, but then we started talking like we normally did, and i felt comfortable around her again.

''s-so z-zach, i have something to tell you,'' she said, ''i like you. i have for a long time. and i know you don't have the same feelings, but i thought i'd t-tell you.''

i looked at her. i felt a mix of feelings- i was happy and i was shocked. out of all people, she chose me?

athena looked at me, waiting for an expression on my face to reveal everything, or just a few words.

in an instant, i kissed her.

she was very tense at first, but she reacted quickly.

the buzz that came from my phone completely ruined the moment.

''i'll see you around. i'll come visit home, i promise. keep in touch!'' i said, running away.

i could've sworn i heard her laugh a little.
