As soon as we were out of sight of the academy, Spencer let go of my arm. My hand immediatley sprung up to rub where a new bruise would surely pop up soon. Spencer saw and said, "Sorry if I hurt you." I know he didn't mean it. He was just saying that. "Why would you be sorry? You're a jerk at best!" I shouted. He jumped at my raised tone and clapped his hand over my mouth. "SHUT. UP." He whisper-yelled, "Do you WANT the Tigers to find us? And I don't like the way you're talking to me!"
Ah, yes. The Tigers. How could I forget? The Tigers are the Richies rivals. The Tigers are a bunch of street kids. Led by Damon Gonzalez, who had been kicked out of almost every school, which was a shame because everybody at Artemis who had met him said that, yes he's terrifying, but he gave off a superior intellectual air.
I was about to respond when...
"Little to late for that, Spence." Said a lower voice with an American accent. We turned around and saw him. Damon Gonzalez. In the flesh. Word is that he likes to keep himself hidden, so it's a miracle that we got to see him at all. "It's obvious she doesn't want to be around you, so leave her alone."
Spencer turned red at that. "Why the bloody hell should I listen to you?!" he yelled.
Damon just chuckled. "No need to raise your voice, Spence. Just giving you a choice between the easy way and th hard way."
Spencer growled and lunged at Damon, but said boy just sidestepped him. He grabbed Spencer by the collar of his uniform shirt, pulled him back, and socked him in the face. Spencer fell to the ground whimpering and holding his nose, blood spilling from between his hands.
"Come on." Damon said looking at me. Then he walked ahead.
He walked me home without a word. When he dropped me off at my apartment he was about to leave when I spoke up. "Thanks for that. You know... with Spencer."
He looked at me for a second then said, "No problem."
"So, I guess I'll see you around?" I asked tentatively.
He thought for a second, "Maybe." Then he turned and walked away. I don't know why but I felt that wouldn't be the last I saw of him in a long time.
