Awakening with a headache, I saw Eldon open his eyes as well. Icarus was still laying in the opposite side of the room, this time with a scowl strewn across his face.
A picture of the dream popped up in my head. It was a picture of Eldon's mother.
I looked down at Eldon. "I know," I said. I got up and walked over to Icarus. Eldon also padded over and looked straight into his father's eyes.
"Your mother . . ." Icarus started, "she was with us. She left unwillingly, taken from us." He replied and arched his neck so his head was level with mine. "Taken by another dragon."
Eldon blinked and then squeaked.
"Yes, that is him. I'm sorry I couldn't keep your mother safe." Eldon must have sent a mental picture to him.
"It was Linox. I saw what happened. Eldon had a dream about it. But—"
Icarus cut me short. "You intruded his dream!"
"I was just—"
"Aaron," Icarus growled.
"Aren't we supposed to connect?"
"Not in that way. The connection is to ensure that the dragon and rider can be as one. Entwined in body and spirit, but that does not mean you must get in to each other's heads."
Silence.
Icarus turned back around and went back to sleep as Eldon and I went outside through the front door.
By now, the sun had just rose over the mountains and the sky was a clear blue. The grass and wild flowers just opening, vibrant and aromatic. Birds chirped happily and a small pack of dear gracefully frolicked through the valley. It was a perfect morning.
Eldon and I played outside, talked through mental images and watched the nature. We sat on the side of the cliff's edge and looked out. Eldon sat beside me, eying down a flock of birds while stretching his wings and letting the wind swoop under them.
I brushed my hair to the side, closed my eyes and took a deep breath. The sun hit my face, warming me and air smelled of flowers and rich soil, just like in Eldon's dream.
I shook the memories of the dream away and stood up. Eldon looked up at me and squeaked, leaving his mouth open.
"Hungry?" I asked. The little dragon responded with another squeak and padded towards the front door.
We both went inside and saw Vitalli already in the kitchen preparing food over the counter while a pot hung over the brick oven in the wall beside him. In one hand, he held a knife, in the other, a loaf of bread.
"Lunch?" he asked, raising a brow and gesturing with the loaf.
"Yes, thank you. Have you anything for Eldon?" I replied, but as I did, he lowered a plate of raw meat to the floor. It was some of the meat from the buck Icarus and I had caught earlier.
Eldon, seeing the plate of meat, scrambled over as fast as he could while slipping on the finished floor.
My uncle, noticing my attention to the meat said, "Nice catch."
I nodded, a non-verbal "thank you," and then helped by setting out the bowls on the dining room table, sitting in the center of the house.
Vitalli followed close behind, placing a plate of sliced bread down, and then carried in the pot of stew, steam rolling into the air.
We sat down together started eating. I dipped a chunk of bread into the stew to soak up the broth. As I went to take a bite, I heard a small peep at my side.
