An Awful Mistake

Kaminari could tell that their relationship was over by the neatly stacked boxes outside of their—well, his most definitely ex-girlfriend's apartment.

The words that he had heard on a regular basis as his dad drowned down beer after beer and loudly complained about women flitted through his mind. "Look here son-" he would say, wagging a finger his face, "If she throws shit at you and throws a huge ass hissy fit, then you can get her back 100%. But if she calmly tells you what the hell she wants to tell you-" Kaminari could see his father's face crinkle in a mix of sadness and anger as the two of them remembered the vague face of his mother that left long ago, "-there's no way that you can get her back." He, being the disinterested teenager he was, gave a short response that satisfied his dad enough to go onto a completely different topic that came through one of his ears and out the other.

His fingers lightly dragged over the perfectly folded boxes. Now that he really thought about it, he and his dad had the same taste in woman.

[Name] was calm personified. Everything she did was done with an easy going, yet calculated manner. She was a pillar of stability, and in any time that he would find himself in a crisis, she would lean him down until his face was buried in her hair and tell him that in the end everything would turn out the way it should. She'd then go on to distract him with Netflix, ice cream, and lots and lots of kisses that never failed to cheer him up.

A short chuckle left his mouth. Knowing her and her love of "you're in the right; they just a bitch and here's why" powerpoints, he wouldn't be surprised if he had to sit through one about him and all of the reasons (or, at least, the one that he knew that she would say without a doubt) that she was breaking up with him. She was just that kind of person. In fact, it even shocked him how she managed to get this far with a dumbass like him.

He stood there in front of their apartment, heart dropping as he realized that she had already changed the nameplate that had once read Kaminari and [Last Name] to only show her own last name. It felt like it was obvious that she would erase his presence of ever residing in the small one bedroom apartment in the short four hours since the secret was spilled, but he still held on to the small sliver of hope that she hadn't.

Hope, one so strong that it gave him enough courage to even think of going into the lion's den. That was one of the two reasons that he still came over despite knowing fully well that a moving company was just moments away from taking all of his belongings to his dad's place. The other reason was to let her know out of his own mouth what he had done. Kaminari bit his lip as he stared down the door. Was this even necessary? She already had heard Jīrō's confession, so why should he even bother to tell her himself?

Well, he wasn't going to find out the answer just by standing awkwardly in the hallway. The door opened with ease, and he could barely stop himself from shouting that he was home or teasing her for forgetting to lock the door. The small living room and the kitchen stared back at him. It looked so different without his influence. Had he walked into the wrong apartment?
