The song is Lil Peep’s first posthumous release; he died on November 15, 2017. After Peep’s death, Marshmello tweeted his condolences and shared that he and Peep had been planning to work on “Spotlight.”
It is a bittersweet farewell to a pioneer of the emo-rap sub-genre. Beginning with a soft guitar riff and leading into dark pulsating synths behind Lil Peep’s brooding vocals, “Spotlight” follows the singer’s turmoil as he struggles to cope with a recent breakup.
