Maverick was very persistent.

After detention ended Maverick and I were both in a great mood. The both of us were walking out of the school together, still laughing about the whole ordeal inside when he insisted that I drive home with him. If it were any other day I would've kindly turned down the offer, but since it started raining again and all I had was one of my brothers old hoodies I gave in.

I opened the door to his black G Wagon and was shocked to find not a single food wrapper or stray fast food cup. The interior was pristine, almost as if it hadn't been touched.

"This is a really nice car," I started, hopping in quickly as the rain poured, "I thought you worked at an auto body shop?" I teased, buckling up as I pushed back my damp, wild hair.

He took out his keys and side eyed me, "I do," he began, "This car used to belong to a rich guy that lived in the north side, he was one of my regulars. Couple months ago he brought this one in," I watched as he ran a hand over the dashboard, "Told me he needed it detailed, two months went by and he never came to pick it up," he explained turning the key in the ignition, "I must've left him about a million voicemails. He never responded, but I got a single text message from him last week explains that he moved to Tokyo and would no longer need it. He told me to keep it as a goodbye present."

I whistled lowly in appreciation as I observed the entirety of the expensive car, "You must be a really good with cars if he gave you one worth the same price as my house as a parting gift." He chuckled and shrugged.

"The guy was practically rolling in cash, I'm sure he just wanted to go out with a bang." He figured nonchalantly as he leaned onto the center counsel. I moved my arm away from his and settled it on my lap as subtly as possible.

Maverick cleared his throat, "So why were you in a such a shitty mood all day?" He asked, clearly that had been on his mind for awhile now. I think he was just waiting for the right time to ask.

I gazed out the window, "My boyfriend is sick and I was worried, my brother went AWOL for two days and refuses to tell me where he went, both my sister and father refuse to answer my calls, and to top it all off I had to jog to school today in the rain with a sprained ankle." I elaborated, tapping absentmindedly on the door, "So I wasn't feeling too great by the time I got to school today."

It was quiet for a few seconds and I wondered if I had over spilled. I probably made him uncomfortable dropping all my problems onto him like that.

We pulled up in front of my house, sitting in silence as the rain pelted hard on the hood of the car. Maverick was breathing steadily, and I waited for him to say something so all this wouldn't feel so unfinished. I could tell he had something to get out anyways.

"You're a strong girl Kaia," I began, his eyebrows furrowed and his jaw ticking as he stared out at the rain, "I know you do all of this and put yourself through everything that you do because you love all these people. You're a compassionate, loving person. It's a quality that I'm envious of sometimes. The fact the you always put everyone else first." He told me, his voice genuine and raw.

"But sometimes angel, you gotta put yourself first. Because although your strong and all, one day you'll stretch yourself so thin you break." He advised, looking me right in the eye. It felt like he was getting a glimpse into my soul. But for once, I didn't cower, I stared him right back unflinchingly.

And for a split second, as I watched his lick his bottom lip and his gaze linger into my lips as well, I swore it felt like I was seeing directly into his.
