ATHENA WAS GLAD to be off that island. Even though she didn't quite like Mystic Falls all that much, it was better than the hell island where an ancient evil spirit resided. Rebekah was overly protective in their journey back, and even when they arrived back at their place. She had instructed Athena not to leave the house. But, of course, that didn't last long.

Whenever Katherine was found, she would be killed mercilessly. The doppelganger deserved to be happy but that didn't seem like the outcome at this point. Klaus was looking for her and it was a race between him versus Damon, Athena, and Rebekah.

It didn't take her long thankfully to find where Damon was. She had caught the last bit of his conversation when she arrived. "I'm at a truck stop in the boonies looking for a dead vampire that might lead to Katherine and the cure." Athena flashed around to draw his attention, which worked. "Look, just grab her and get her home. I'll be there when I can."

He hung up and looked around suspiciously. Damon turned back around to see Athena just a few feet from him. "You. I thought you and blondie-Bex were still vacationing on Numbskull Island."

Athena didn't smile or laugh at his comment. "We were looking for answers. All we found was Professor Shane, dead, along with anyone that knows about the cure."

"Guess your sister won't turn into a real girl after all."

He turned and began to walk away. She smirked slyly. "Are you sure at that? All I need is to find Katherine, and you're going to help me."

Damon faced her. "Why would I help you?"

Athena held up a vial of blood and walked toward him. "What is the one thing that can cure a werewolf bite? Oh, that's right, Nik's blood. And I managed to retrieve some."

When he went to grab it, she pulled it away from him. Damon rolled his eyes and then spoke grudgingly. "Fine. Follow me. I might know where to look."

Then together they walked off in the direction he said. It didn't take very long for them to arrive at the nearest hospital, "Grove Hills". Damon led her down a hallway past many doctors and nurses.

"Why would a dying vampire check into a hospital?" she questioned.

He pointed up. "See that little bright thing in the sky? It's called the sun." Athena rolled her eyes. "He needs to avoid that. Plus, the hospital's open 24/7. Not to mention he's hungry and delusional."

Damon stopped and then surreptitiously pushed open a door into another room; Athena followed him. They had walked into a dark storage room with coolers and shelves. He went over to one of the coolers and opened it. Empty. The next, empty as well. 

Athena nodded. "Well then. Congrats, you might have found our guy."

He continued to check the other ones but they were empty as well. "Stefan said the Mystic Falls Hospital had its entire blood bank raided, too."

She frowned. "How would our vampire - who is dying - raid two blood banks?"

"That's because he can't. He wouldn't have time to steal from both hospitals. This is someone else. But on the plus side, if our guy did by chance come here, he's got nothing, which means he's nearby and he's hungry."

When he went to exit, she stood in front of him to block his path. "This better not be some sort of trick."

He made a face. "I want to find Katherine as much as you do."

Athena cocked her head to the side. "Do you now? You see, I heard your chat with Stefan. Elena broke the sire bond. If you find the cure, you'd just be curing her to love your brother again. Rebekah deserves the cure, not that thing you call your girlfriend."

She turned on her heel and left Damon to think about what she said.

By the time night had fallen, Damon had come up with a plan to lure the vampire out. So he was feeding on one of the hospital workers. while Athena stood nearby, looking bored. "Must you be so dramatic?"

"You have to take pride in your work," he told her. Damon compelled the woman. Now. I want you to walk very slowly to your car. Off you go."

The woman walked away and Athena went over to him. "I don't get what you plan is."

"I've been on the other side of a wolf bite. First, you get really sick. Then you get really hungry. Since the sun's gone down, I'm imagining he's gonna be looking for his last supper. I just laid out a 3-course, 115-pound meal for him."

While the woman stumbled to her car and the dying vampire appeared several yards away from her. Damon sped away and Athena's head snapped around to see Damon with the vampire. She flashed over and just then, he ripped out the vampire's heart. "Damon what the hell?!"

The bloody heart rested in his hands and he dropped it to the ground. "He was too far gone. I put him out of his misery."

Damon walked away, leaving Athena to stand horrified looking at the dead vampire. There was no way it was just a coincidence. Her phone rang in her pocket. Klaus. "What Nik?"

"Rebekah is searching the whole town for you. Where are you?"

She began to walk. "Finding Katherine. But Damon just killed the only shot I had at finding it. It doesn't matter anymore. I'm going home."

"Athena-"

The said girl hung up on him and then continued to walk down the road. Perhaps when they learned that the cure would be the death of all vampires, maybe it was because so many people would go after it. Athena wanted Rebekah to have it, but with everything happening, it seemed like the only person getting the cure was Silas.

It was pitch black dark besides the moon in the sky. Athena sighed and then continued to walk when she got a feeling in the pit of her stomach. The girl turned around but saw no one. Not in the mood, she scoffed and then resumed her journey. But, of course, she didn't know that one of Marcel's men had just spotted her.

And Thomas wouldn't know for days.

I'm really hoping to finish the book this weekend! Hopefully, I can and then I might get the first chapter of the next book up.
