I scoured the shelves looking for a great book to read. “As weird as this might sound, you should read The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight”. A man’s arm reached over my shoulder to grab the book. “Thanks” I smiled and turned around, Christian. He didn’t take a step back, only two inches from my face. “Hmm I would have never taken you for a sappy love story kind of guy”, Christian just looked at me “Hello beautiful” he smiled at me and put his right arm up against the book shelf. His breath smelt of mint and his body smelled of cologne. I inhaled his scent, and he looked at me funny. Oh god, he probably thinks I’m a fucking weirdo now. Great. “Did you just smell me?” his eye brows furrowed and he chuckled. “…..Nooooo…” I ducked underneath his arm and walked over to get my coffee.
“So Evie, how long have you lived in Gambier, Ohio?” “My entire life! I’ve never moved, not even to a new home!” I took a sip of my coffee. “How about you?” I asked him. “I grew up all around the U.S. I haven’t stayed in one place for longer than two years. My dad gets a new job ever so often so by the time I finally make good friends, I have to leave” he sat down at the bar and looked over the menu. “Tell me about some of the things you love E” “E?” I looked at him. “No no. My names E-V-I-E” I spelled out every single letter, I hate it when people give me nicknames. My name is already short enough. “Well should I just call you beautiful then?” he winked at me. What is with this boy and winking at me? I didn’t know what to say next so I took a sip of my coffee. “Tell me about the things you like to do” Christian said. “Well I really enjoy reading, going on runs, napping, finishing a whole season of a T.V. show in a day, and I really enjoy spending my weekends at the animal shelter, what about you?” I looked up and as he told me about his favorite things he likes to do I couldn’t help but watch him. The way the side of his lips curl up as he talked about the things he loved, and how he never broke eye contact with me. “And I enjoy playing the guitar” “That’s so cool! I can play the Ukulele” I got really excited. Great. I probably look really stupid! He laughed and smiled. Okay maybe I’m doing alright. “Just don’t get awkward” I told myself.
Three refills of my coffee and I looked down at my phone it was 8 o’clock. “Shit!” I said under my breath. I had 5 missed calls from Abel. “Hey, Christian these last four hours have been great but I’m really late picking up my brother from soccer practice” I grabbed my purse and shoved my phone into it. “I’m really sorry! I had a great time!” I yelled at him as I ran out the door. I climbed into the car, turned it on and backed out of the parking lot. The entire time I drove I was smiling and thinking of Christian. Perfect, I think I’m starting to fall for him.
