The wind whistled high above the hills. Stars danced and twinkled, and the moon shone brightly in contrast to the darkness that lay beyond. The hills were bathed in light in a calming way, the grass on them ruffled by the wind and shining almost as bright as the moon itself.
The peace was broken by a caterwaul of pain as the mother birthed, far away from the WindClan nursery. A small kit lay on the grass. The ginger tom beside her started frantically licking the kit before pushing it closer to it's mother. Another wail, the splinter of a stick, and the final kit. The tom picked it rapidly again before pushing it closer to it's mother.
The mother, still gasping, looked weakly down at her kits and purred. "They're the most beautiful things I've even seen," she said, "look, Flameflight, this one looks like you." The colorpoint queen pointed her tail at a ginger kit with black paws and a white tail.
"How about Foxkit?" Flameflight suggested. The queen purred and nodded.
"And we'll name this one Ashenkit," she said, looking at the other she-cat. She let out a tiny mew of cold. Flameflight sat and wrapped his tail over his kits.
"I love them," he said, "and I'll miss you, Sootface. I know we can't be together, but I won't forget you."
Sootface nuzzled him, "We have a plan, remember? We'll be together for the next three moons. With our kits."
Comforted by his mate's words, Flameflight stared off to where he knew the SkyClan camp was. He would miss his home, but he'd be back.
Sootface stood and left, heading away from their nest and to the WindClan camp. A little later, she came back and sat back down, nodding to Flameflight. He stood up and set off in the direction of the SkyClan camp.
Eventually, he reached it. Tentatively, Flameflight padded into the leader's den. Dawnstar was awake.
"Hello, Flameflight," she said, "what brings you here?"
He dipped his head respectfully, "I had a dream from StarClan," he fibbed, "they said leafbare this year will be harsh and cold. They requested I leave SkyClan territory and bring back extra prey."
Dawnstar looked taken aback, but she nodded, "Very well. I will warn my warriors. Thank you." Feeling sick and guilty, Flameflight left the den and returned to his kits.
It's worth it. For Sootface. For Foxkit and Ashenkit.

Flameflight watched, tail twined with Sootface's, his kits play. Ashenkit pinned down Foxkit, "I'm a badger!" She squealed at Foxkit, "I'm going to eat you!"
"Noooooo!" Foxkit wailed, throwing her sister off, "You'll never eat me! I'm a warrior!"
Ashenkit growled, and they tussled again.
They broke away from tussling and Foxkit skipped over to Sootface. "When will we get to meet the clans?" She asked.
Flameflight looked at Sootface. There was no point in hiding the truth. "Later today," he said. Both kits squealed in excitement. They don't know what it means. They don't know they'll never see each other again.
