Now things are peaceful. Life has returned to a normal state, shares are returning to normal levels and things are finally looking up. Yes, I was crippled, left with one arm. But that doesn't matter to me. I could still do most things with one hand, like hold that of my lover's. Linda, now released by the hospital, still returns on the daily to see me. She says that it's simply "returning the favor", but I know the truth behind those eyes. We were talking, discussing what our lives would be like now that we're together and no longer fugitives. Yeah, for some reason, the CPU's gave both of us an official pardon. No idea why, maybe they're just merciful. Our chat was interrupted by a doctor who entered.
-"Jason, may I speak with you in private for a moment?" he asked.
-"Yeah. Sorry, Linda." I said.
-"Don't worry about it." she said, stepping outside.
The doctor, Nigel, who I had seen multiple times during my visit, said something that sparked my interest.
-"So Jason, your arm. We both know it's not growing back anytime soon. I'm ready to offer an alternative if you're willing to try it." he explained.
-"I'm listening." I said.
-"Paradoxically, thanks to the war you caused, we were able to advance prosthetic technology so much further than anything we ever planned. The CPU's have decided to give you a second chance, entirely. It's your choice though, I'll give you some time to think."
He departed and Linda returned. She seemed curious.
-"A prosthetic? Like, a robotic arm?" she asked.
-"Yeah, essentially." I said.
-"Have you already decided?"
-"No..."
-"Well, the way I see it...is that you've got another chance at living a normal life. Why not use it to its full extent?"
-"I never liked the idea. The thought of a machine being a part of me is frightening."
-"Well...I can't decide anything for you. Just think about it at least, for me?"
-"Of course."
She leaned in and gave me a quick kiss on my cheek before walking out slowly.
-"For her, huh? That adds to the list of all the things I've already done for her. I like that though." I thought.
It's strange because I'm at a sort of stalemate with myself. Do I accept the thing I hate the most to become a part of me? Or do I stick with the thoughts I already have. "Man's always gotta be better than machine". That's what I've always said to myself. But now, for Linda...I think I'll break it.
-"Alright then..." I said to myself.
Let's do this.
5 HOURS LATER
-"Alright Jason, just give yourself a few days to test everything. You know, sensitivity, link, movements. That stuff." The doctor explained.
-"I will." I said.
My new arm wasn't exactly what I expected. No fake skin or anything to cover all the moving parts. It just kinda looked weird, but I guess it's mine now.
