"Chaeyoung-ah, remember to lock your doors and shut all the windows, okay?" my mother's voice rang through the speaker of my handphone.
"Yes, mom." I smiled, pushing past the boxes.
"And don't skip meals!" she continued.
"I won't," I promised.
"Okay, I love you. Call us soon." she laughed.
"I will, bye mom. Love you. Tell dad, I love him too." I joined in on the laughter as my father's voice was muffled by my mother's.
"I won't!" she playfully hung-up and I smiled from ear-to-ear. I was really going to miss them being around all the time. But I had to move out for this internship, home was just too far to commute to the university every day. Being alone was just a sacrifice I had to make to achieve my dream.
Thud. I stopped as a box fell onto its side. It wasn't the box falling that nearly scared me to death, but the fact that it continued to move. I crept over to it slowly, my hand shaking as I turned it around.
"Oh my god!" I jumped back as something grey and furry rolled out.
"Mew." A kitten? A kitten!
"Wait a minute...where did you come from?" I knelt on the ground in front of it, inspecting the box. There was no writing, but it looked beat-up and old. It definitely wasn't one of my boxes, but it appeared to have been sitting outside for a while.
"Mew." the kitten, retreated back to the familiar box.
"The moving men must have thought your box was one of mine. Poor thing," I slowly offered my hand, letting it sniff me, "you're all alone." The kitten still didn't come out so I stood up and walked to the kitchen. I warmed up some milk, thank goodness mom had stocked up the kitchen before I moved in. I rummaged through the boxes for a bowl and pulled out a small blue one. I gently poured the warm milk in and walked back over to the kitten in the box. "You hungry?" I placed the bowl between us, waiting for the scent to draw the kitten out. It took a while but slowly the little ball of fluff ventured away from the box.
"You're really all alone, huh?" I'm just living on my own. It must be so hard for you to be on your own completely. "No one deserves to be alone," I whispered.
"Mew." I blinked as the kitten stared back at me, it's muzzle slightly damp from the milk. It had finished the entire bowl. Slowly, it made it's way over to me, sniffing my hand.
"Well, I guess since you were tossed in here, you have a right to stay. They did dislocate your home, Mr Cat." I smiled, scratching the kitten behind the ear. "Are you a Mr Cat?" I wondered aloud.
"Mew." it turned away back to its box.
"For now, you can be Mr Cat until we find out for sure." I laughed. My phone buzzed, the reminder I had set to email Professor Shin my updated portfolio illuminated the screen. "Oh, right!" I quickly picked through my bag and pulled out my laptop, hitting send on the email after attaching my portfolio.
"Mew." I looked up to see Mr Cat sniffing at some boxes.
"You're absolutely right Mr. Cat, I should unpack." I smiled, getting up gently so as not to spook the kitten I walked over to the boxes and began unpacking my things. Thankfully, the apartment came furnished and all I had to do was put the things I had brought with me in the right places. I opened the door to the empty room that would serve as my studio, the large windows gave a great view of the city. I pushed all the boxes with my art supplies against the wall. The bigger things would arrive tomorrow, for now this room would stay bare. Little meows tore me away from the empty studio room and towards the living area. "What's wrong, Mr. Cat?" I looked around to see where it had disappeared to, finding the box empty. The kitten was sitting in the empty milk bowl. "Are you still hungry?" I walked over and scooped it up, being careful to make it feel secure in my arms. There was no struggle and it relaxed against the warmth of my body. "Let's get you some more milk then." I glanced at it's rear before placing it on the ground gently and sure enough the little circle confirmed that it was indeed a Mr. Cat.
