My back throbbed dully as I placed an incense stick in the major rooms of the house. I lit every stick, watching the smoke curl and fill the room. For the moment, I was alone. The house creaked and groaned, filling the silent hallways. Although I knew I was mostly safe at this point, anxiety filled me as I waited for Robert and Gloria.
Gloria suggested that they come over and help me pray to keep away Miss Ida for good. When they arrived, they both carried a bible. They began reading passages and the room, which had been freezing when the arrived, slowly grew warmer the longer they read. After reading for about an hour, they stopped and listened. The house was silent, but that didn't mean much.

We walked through the different rooms and they were all the way they were left. Afterwards, we walked through the cemetery and looked at all the names of the children. I lost count after 50. Some were as young as 5 years old and I felt my heart squeeze. I prayed for each child, hoping they'd finally be at rest knowing that Miss Ida couldn't hurt them anymore. I offered to make Robert and Gloria lunch as a thank you and ushered them into the large house, which didn't seem as scary now. Mom and Sarah soon returned from the movies and both gave me a confused smile when they entered. Just another weird quirk is developed recently, they probably thought. I smiled back and this time, I wasn't faking it.

For the first time in weeks, I slept peacefully.
