We keep going until we hear a scream pierce the air, then silence. The peak of the volcano is within sight and we approach it cautiously, seeking out the source of the scream.
"Do you think it was Amy?" Reginald whispers. Our eyes scan the area around us, trying to spot any movement. To our left we spy a blur of blue, then another.
"It's the blue team!"
"We have to beat them to the top!" Tyler bellows and sprints ahead. The rest of us chase after him, seeing the blue team on our heels. Derek must be with them.
"Come on!" Tyler shouts and we stumble over the lip of the volcano and drop to our knees.
"We made it," Brian grins and sprawls out on his back.
"The two teams remaining have finished the race, points will now be tallied. Those of you who win, will find yourselves back in your lives before the time of your death." The mechanical announcer drones and we roll our eyes, sick of hearing it. The world changes and I feel cool air lick at my skin through my thin hoodie. The moon shimmers into view and I glance down at my watch.
11:59.
"So, I've been thinking, maybe would you want to go out...?" A guy's voice trails off and I see Derek walking beside me.
"Oh, with you?" I feel heat blossom in my stomach. A loud screech draws our attention, but we take no mind of it.
"Look out!" Derek screams and shoves my body, making me slam into the wet grass. A loud bam and then a crash erupts behind me.
Later they told me the truck came out of nowhere, but I knew the truth.
One of us had won, and the other had not.
