Chapter one :
Walls glistening with damp, windows barred up and food resembling slop. It was no mistake that this was prison. Durable metal cuffs encircled the wrists of hundreds here, including Louis.
"Right, you get five minutes for a monitored phone call then you're back in your cells, you hear me?" The balding warden yelled.
Louis remained in his four walls, who was there to call?
All inmates rushed to the booths, it was their highlight of the week yet equally it was the same time Louis was more alone than ever. He picked at his cuffs, a dirty habit he had picked up since being locked up.On the first day he talked to a man on his way to the cafeteria, the guy had said as long as he gets his one phone call a week to talk to his wife then he can get through the tough parts.
Even back then Louis had lost hope, knowing there would be nobody to wish to talk to, no warm memories getting him through the night, just the cold bleak walls of his enclosed cell.
Every week he was left alone, staring through the bars at empty cells in which the men would return back to with a little more hope and little more joy each time. Each week he went through who he thought was his friends but who turned out to be complete bastards.
And each week, Louis cried himself to sleep.
