I don't know what is happening. I hear men in military uniforms calling orders. I don't know where they came from. Then it occurs to me. They're here. The monsters, as my team likes to call them. I then hear a voice that is familiar to me. I turn to face the voice yelling to me from behind. I almost lose her in the commotion of the crowd. It's my friend, Angel. Her piercing grey eyes looking more distraught than usual and her braided blonde hair in a mess. Angel works over in the medical facility. I haven't a clue why she's over here."Wren! What are you doing? We have to go!" She says while clutching my shoulders. Her face inches away from mine. "Go? Go where? I ask. She sighs disapprovingly and pulls me through the crowd. To our unknown destination.
This is strange. This almost never happens. Why is this happening now? And how?
As we walk at a painfully slow rate, I catch a glimpse of the monsters.
There they are. I don't panic, but I want to scream. The monsters are even more frightening than I have been told. The completely black and emotionless eyes are what scare me the most. The fact that they still look relatively normal makes me want to pick up an axe and chuck it at each one of their heads. How dare they? They ruined my life, yet they still do this. I continue to move as those stupid monsters attack innocent people through a faulty gate.
"Angel! Where are we going?" I ask my friend as she grips my wrist.
" There!" She says as she points to the main building "it's the only place we'll be safe"
Wait. My mum. My brother. Where are they? I don't see them anywhere. My mum must have heard the sirens and have known what to do. But my brother? He's an idiot, so I don't know where he went. He works as a guard so he must be helping to fend off the monsters.
As the crowd slowly parts, I catch a glimpse of my brother, but not what I want to see him doing. He's become on of them. A mindless killing machine. The only brother I have, gone. Mum doesn't know. It'll kill her. I struggle to release my wrist from my friends strong grip. I refuse. I refuse to go on. I refuse to continue running from something that has taken so much from me. I hope my brother knows I loved him, but now we must live apart. Never to be in each others company again.
I see the main building. Ben is helping to prop the doors open to let people in. His brown eyes look as if he could break into tears at any given moment. His knuckles white from holding the heavy-duty doors for so long. I want to run to him and tell him everything that has happened, but that'll make him want to cry even more. I know it.
I've lost sight Angel since I last let myself free of her grasp. I'll have to meet her inside. Now my mother is my biggest priority. I have to go in through the opposite door, so I can't say hi to Ben. I walk in the building to find my mother leading a small group of children into a separate room.
I can't tell her about my brother. I can't take it. I can't imagine her reaction. She's lost to many of the people she was close to. I just can't do it. I want to break down and cry right here. In the middle of the floor. But someone grips my shoulder and whispers in my ear. "We need you now." The voice says with such hostility that I shudder.
