you may come to a time when mastering the guitar by learning from a teacher that ''this music is boring.'' And that you wanna learn from your own playlist on ''itunes'' or something. Well I have just what you need to know.
- don't down your teachers music right from the start. You should only move on once you know all the basics he/she has taught you and understand how notes are played. To go on your own you should wait at least 2 yrs or a yr and a half.
- Explore the world of rock and the people that listen to it and make it (I started off learning the classics).
- Get comfortable with using your new instrumental vocabulary. This will make it easier to communicate with other musicians.
Now lets find some songs and what to do once you found them:
- you can find a jingle almost anywhere these days! Some examples are commercials, events, tv, your friends, elders, your guitar teacher, radio, parties, ... etc.
- listen to the song over and over. why? what am I looking for? because you might make the mistake of thinking a piano sounded like a guitar. The song might not even have a guitar in it. Most times in Hip-Hop it's just a beat or sound that's like a guitar. Also when listening to a song you found make sure it's in your level. Your favorite band might be Metallica for example. And you just heard the best guitar solo ever and you wanna learn it, but you are of the beginner level. A lot of bands like Metallica are NOT for beginners. Those are for guitarist of expert status. You will be wasting your time and especially if you are trying to play it on an acoustic. Just not the right sound dude (and I think using an acoustic guitar for a hard rock song that was originally played on electric guitar is disrespectful).
- watch bands perform (live or in their music videos) the songs on youtube. It'll make you see what kind of energy the song gives the guitarist. And how he should feel when playing it. I always try to mimic the attitude of the guitarist in the band then make my own style from that. Also get to know that band by watching interviews.
- Listen to the sounds in the song. If you're listening to a rock song one day and you decide to play it but you hear unfamiliar sounds in it look up the song and how it's played. One weird sound you might hear is ''muting.'' It's basically laying your hand over a string(s) with pressing it down on the wood of the neck and strumming it, which makes sorta like a scratching sound.
