“I will be back before 10. Okay?” My brother told me kissing my forehead and grabbing his keys. I love Cameron so much. I look up to him. He has made it big time in six seconds. I am so proud of my big brother. We are so close we would run around the yard naked when we were growing up together. I don’t have that guy friend that you can call at 2am and talk to. I have my brother for that. I think that he is the only person I can trust sometimes. Cam has gotten me through really hard times, and I have done the same for him. We are four years apart and we have been inseparable since the moment Cam laid eyes on me according to Mom.
“Okay, just be careful. Stay off vine when you are driving,” I said worrying. Cam rolled his eyes, smiled and walked out of the house closing the door behind him. He was on his way to a close by Hampton Inn. Nash, Carter, Matt, and Hayes are here in California for a short visit. I don’t understand why they can’t just stay here. My mom said it would be fine. I ran upstairs to my room. I jumped on my bed and started to mess around on my phone while listening to music on my open computer. I lost track of time sitting on vine and instagram. I looked at the time. 10:45. Wait didn’t Cam say before 10? I ran downstairs to see if he was home and he didn’t come up to make fun of me by saying that ‘he told me so’. My mom must have gone to sleep. “Cam?” I called around the first floor. “Cam?!” I called again. The phone rang. I ran to the kitchen and picked up the wall phone.
“Hello? Ms. Dallas?” A man's voice asked.
“Hello. This is her daughter. Who is speaking?” I asked
“This is the hospital. Your brother has gotten into a large accident. We need you and your mother to come to the hospital.” He said. No. It’s not real. This can’t be happening. I brokedown.
“MOM!” I scream starting to cry through the house.
“Miss?” the man asked.
“W-what? This isn’t real! This can’t be happening! Is this a dream? Is he okay? Is he alive? Where is he?” I squeezed the phone in my hands. I felt my tears start to make the phone slide down my cheek.
“Miss. Dallas, this is happening. We need you and your mother at the hospital as soon as possible. Right now he is in the operating room.” I heard my mom running down the stairs.
“O-o-okay,” I continued to cry. The man hung up. I dropped the phone. I stood there, staring into the wall.
“What’s happening?” My mom asked behind me. I turned slowly. I looked in my moms eyes and started to ball.
“Cameron,” I whisper under my breath. I hit the ground running to my room. I grabbed a small bag threw my wallet, a few packets of tissues in it, a few other things, my phone, and my car keys. I sprint down the stairs.
“Laura! What is going on!” My mom screams.
“Cam,” I continue to ball. “the hospital,” I finish. My mom started to cry. I grab her wrist and pull her out the door and into the passenger seat of my car. I start to drive. We live 20 miles away from the hospital. I drove and drove. Memories were flowing through my mind. We were little and we were watching the princess movies, running through the sprinklers, buying ice cream at grandmas, watching parades, buying hot dogs and pizza, crying when one of us got hurt and so much more. We pulled into the hospital parking lot. Without even parking or turning off the car I jumped out and ran into the building. I didn’t care. I needed to see my brother. I heard my mom screaming while I ran away. I run in and there is a lady at the desk.
“Dallas,” I say panting under my tears.
“Oh, let me see about that,” she clicked around on her computer. I hated this just tell me damn it.
“Please hurry,” I say as nicely as I can. She glared up at me from under her glasses then continued to click around a few times.
“Mr. Dallas is in the operation room right now. Is going to be put on floor 7, room 814. Can I get why-” I cut her off my running to the elevators. I look behind me to see my mom. Everything was went into slow motion. My running, pressing the button for the elevator, the elevator, my mom and I running to room 814. I felt sick and everything went black. My ears were ringing. I could faintly hear some voices turn to screams and footsteps running closer. I felt the people around me pick me up. Where are you carrying me? I want to see my brother.
I woke up and I heard a machine beeping. I look around me. The beeping is the heart monitor. Then I heard another one, it was slower and off beat. I tear the curtain away.
“Cameron,” I see my brother laying there; asleep. He was broken, bloody, black and blue. The sight hurt my heart and soul. I jump out of the hospital bed and onto the floor grabbing his hand gently. I clench his hand in between mine and bring my face to them. I ball into my dead looking brothers hand. “Don’t leave me, damn you!” I manage to sniffle. I just realized that when I jumped out of the bed an alarm started going off. People started to run in. Our mom was right behind the doctors and nurses. I don’t look away from my brother.
“Laura,” my mom said trying to get me away from him. “C’m-”
“NO!” I scream crying. “I am staying right here! With him!” My mom looks down at the floor and backs off. This can’t be happening. My brother looks like he is going to die. I see a nurse come in and start playing with the tubes that are connected to Cameron’s arm. “What are you giving him?” I glare up at her.
“Morphine, Miss,” She responded.
“What happened to him? Why did he crash? Was it his fault?”
“Miss, I don’t know. I am just a nurse.” She says getting annoyed.
“Well could you figure it out and tell me?” I said getting annoyed also. She looked at me coldly rolling her eyes and walked out. I don’t care if I was rude I want to know what happened to my brother.
“Well Miss, there was a crash and they are still at the scene. I will tell you when I am updated. If he has close friends, you may want to call them to tell them to come say hi.” she said. My wandering mind stopped at thought of Nash, Carter, Matt, and Hayes. I have only met them once before, but I have their numbers. I called Nash, he was totally with the others.
“Hey Laura. What’s up?” I just cried into the phone how do I break it to Nash his best friend could be dying right in front of me. “Are you okay?” he must have heard my whimpers though the speaker.
“Can you come to the hospital? Like now?”
“First of all why?”
“It’s Cam,” I winced with pain that came straight from the heart. Nash was silent. “See you soon,” I continued to cry. Ten minutes later I see four people walk into the room. Nash stopped in place after looking at Cameron. Matt stood behind me and put a hand on my shoulder. Carter sat down at the foot of the bed in a chair my mom was sitting in. My mom left to get cloths because we were going to be here for a few nights. Hayes didn’t even come in. Nash slowly collapsed to the floor. His eyes started to turn red and puffy. He didn’t cry though. I don’t think he could have. Matt leaned down and tried to hug me in the position I was in. He walked into the bathroom. There was silence when Matt closed the door. After a minute we heard sobbing from the bathroom.
Hearing or seeing people I look up to cry, makes me cry. Cater left to get out of there. The room was damp and heavy. I could understand why. Then it was only me with Nash on the opposite side of Cam’s hospital bed on the floor. I looked at him as he got closer to Cameron’s side. He looked at me. Finally starting to cry he got up, walked over to me and hugged me as I continued to hold my brother’s hand. He kissed my cheek.
“I am so sorry,” He whispered. I just sat there and cried as Nash hugged me and told me everything was going to be okay. But really was it?
