They shoved Jacqueline into the wire dog cage. She didn't know where she was. Why did they bring her here? Jacqueline wanted to go home. She was scared. She trembled under the heavy weight of her emotions.
Jacqueline couldn't stop thinking about running ahead on that forest trail and getting lost. Why had she done that? Her mother had told her not to run ahead, but she did it anyway. She was so excited to get back to the park and play that she didn't see them until it was too late. They had shoved a black bag over her head, and taken her to this place. They had called it Rain Hall. She didn't know what that was.
She stumbled and fell on her face, but quickly sat up at the sound of clanking of chains in the dark in the corner opposite her own. Eyes that seemed to glow a devilish read stared unblinkingly at her.
" Who are you?" A young voice, already tainted with distrust echoed from that darkened corner.
"M-my name is Jacqueline but my friends call me Jaq." She whispered, eyes darting like a hummingbird.
"My name is Calvin, but they call me Wolf." The owner of the red orbs inched into the light. His eyes were not red, but a deep reflective amber, covered partially by sandy hair. He wore a tight dog collar weighed with chains. There appeared to be human teeth woven into the frayed and blood stained cloth. He was scantily clad, tatters of clothing held only by clotted blood. Calvin's mouth was covered in the red substance.
"Can I be your friend?" The eight-year-old asked, Bearing his teeth in an attempt to smile. Jacqueline stared at the sharpened enamel.
"What's in it for me?" She whispered, narrowing her slanted eyes in an attempt to appear threatening.
"I have food."
"You're my friend now."
Calvin bared his teeth, stretching his lips back until she could see inflamed gums. His eyes crinkled, eyebrows risen slightly in a mockery of happiness. It only slightly unnerved Jacqueline.
Then the cage door opened. Calvin slunk back into his corner as one of them grabbed Jacqueline. They dragged her down the hallway lit by bright fluorescence. She bucked and screamed. She felt a prick in her neck and the world faded.
