It had been a few weeks since the events from that night. Yato and I had been hanging out almost every day. It was nice to have someone new around, but I'm not sure if I consider him a friend - seeing as I've only known him for a few short weeks.
Though, I often find myself wondering what Yato was doing right now...
Don't get me wrong. It's not like I like him or something. It's just...it's not everyday some guy saves you from an entire gang of thugs with some giant sword. For all I know, it all could've been staged and I had become a part of some stupid tv prank show. Those had to be special effects I saw when that sword turned into a boy after Yato dropped it to the ground.
Shaking my head, I attempted to shake away the thoughts. I had to focus on what I had going on for me right now. A soft sigh escaped my slightly ajar lips; a white mist following the warm breath that entered the chilled air. You could really tell that winter was approaching - and fast. I soon met with my best friend at the gate of the school; waving to her as we then entered the building.
We soon had to part, though, due to us having separate classes throughout the day. From here on, I was alone. Sure, I talked to a few people here and there, but it wasn't as though I considered them to be real friends. [F/n] was the only person I saw as a true friend. We've known each other since grade school.
Entering my classroom, I sat at my desk and let the class roll on as it should. The bell chimed to announce the start of class. That's how the majority of my day went. Until I went to visit the bathroom.
As I finished up washing my hands, I stood and looked in the mirror for a moment before sighing softly; losing myself in thought for a second. That was when I heard something in the bathroom. It almost sounded like a boy was in here. A boy in the girl's room!? I'll ensure that perv learns his place! Balling my hands into fists, I kicked open the stall where the noise was coming from, only to find...
It's empty.
I sighed in relief. It really must've been my imagina---
❝Oh, Hello there!❞ A cheery voice exclaimed from above me, making my head turn upwards in that direction only to spot that same jersey wearing weird sword guy.
❝I'm here to collect your payme--- ACK!!!❞ He was cut off by the sound of me wailing rolls of toilet paper at him while yelling hysterically until he eventually fell of the dividing part of the bathroom stall with a thud.
❝Why the hell are you in the girl's bathroom!? Are you some kind of perv or something!? You have some nerve!❞ I began scolding him and yelling as he looked at me while he just sat there on the floor. Though, before I could react, he stood up quickly and grabbed my arm; pulling me into the closest stall and closing the door. I had my back against the stall wall as Yato stood close to me with a hand over my mouth; signalling me to be quiet with his other hand. I was about to pull my face away from his hand, but stopped as I heard a small group of girls enter the bathroom.
❝You should see the way she runs to school. It's really lame.❞ The sound of a familiar voice reached my ears as a group of chuckles and giggles followed the previous girl's statement.
❝She really is lame. I almost feel bad for her.❞
❝Her parent's are never home, right? I wonder what she even does with herself all alone.❞
❝She probably watches anime or writes fan fictions.❞
Each girl took a jab at whomever they were talking about as they stopped every now and then to laugh at each other's statements. Yato and I only could stand there and listen as the girls continued talking.
❝[Y/N] really is clingy. Almost like some pathetic kid. She's been like that towards me since grade school and it's getting really old real fast.❞ The familiar voice clicked her tongue in annoyance. That voice...it was clearly [F/n]'s...
I could feel tears welling in my eyes as I heard them talk. They were talking about me.
❝Let's get going before Mr. Baldie starts bitching about us being late to class.❞ One of the girls suggested and the others agreed. They then all gathered their belongings and left the bathroom. After they left, Yato and I stood in place for what seemed to be forever to ensure the group had actually left. Once I was sure they were gone, I tore away from Yato's hand and pushed the stall door open.
❝That...I can't believe she...❞ I was at a loss for words. The one and only person I ever considered a friend...they didn't even see me as a friend. Only some joke to tease. I could feel the gaze of Yato on my back as I used the sink for support. I could see him through the mirror as he stared at me for a moment before he rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly and averted his gaze.
❝Sorry. People really suck, but... the world is full of a lot of people to be friends with. You had the right idea going, though. All you really need is one person - one friend - that makes you happy in your life...❞ He tried to comfort me, but I was too hurt at the moment. I couldn't bring myself to even reply back to him. Everything in me felt...numb. Everything around me was monochrome and silent. My world had died around me.
Yato looked back to me before approaching me and gently patting my head with his hand. For some reason, that was the only thing I was able to feel. It was like Yato was radiating some kind of warm light. Though, the moment was short lived as he removed his hand and just smiled a little at me.
❝You'll get through it, don't worry..❞ He paused for a moment before he began speaking again, ❝Oh--...Don't worry about that 5 yen. I didn't really grant a wish. I was just doing the right thing...❞ he gave another small smile before shoving his hands in the pockets of his sweatpants, ❝I'll see ya around, [Y/n].❞ He said with a small nod of his head. With that, he vanished.
I remained in the bathroom until school was over. I didn't wait for [F/n] to walk home together. I left on my own and walked to my home. Entering the building, I closed the door behind me, locking it as I removed my coat and shoes.
❝I'm home!❞ I called out to nobody in particular, seeing as my parents are never home when I am. It was always normal, but...
It was different this time.
My home didn't feel like home. Everything was too silent. The house was too dark. And I didn't care. I walked up to my room and just laid there in bed.
And there I stayed for the next week. Not attending class. Not hanging out with Yato. Not anything. I felt dead. The world felt dead. I guess [F/n] really didn't care since she never once visited me. She sent me one text on the first day I stayed home, but that was it. It's not like I ever replied to her text anyways. I just laid there, staring at my ceiling. I could die right now, and I wouldn't care. Along with the rest of the world that didn't care.
Lifting my phone, I texted Yato. Telling him goodbye and thanking him for being a friend to me, but that we'd no longer be able to hang out. His text reply was confused and clueless. Though, I didn't reply to him as I just laid there and let my world fade.
Soon, I saw nothing but black. It was both warm and cold.
And I let myself go...
