I'm laying in bed. I cannot move. There is a shadow standing at the end of my bed. So dark. The blackest black I have ever seen! It must be at least seven feet tall...much taller than my own five foot five inch minuscule height. At first I think it's the shadow of something outside, a tree perhaps. However the broad shoulders, the dominating stance, slightly hunched, ragged breathing gives it away. It's breathing! Definitely not just a shadow! My hearing is picking up more sounds. Not only is the thing breathing raggedly, it also seems to be making a soft growling noise. I think it noticed I can hear more because it stopped the growling. Instead it starting drooling and licking it's teeth and lips! I can feel my heart about to beat right out of my chest! Feeling like I can finally move, I slowly and carefully reach for my blanket. It's two inches out of my reach laying on my lower thigh. Eyes! They are an almost luminescent blue. They snapped up to my own before I feel them wondering all over my body. Starting at my white hair, green eyes, and then following my throat as I gulped silently. Moving to my white tank top sleep shirt that falls off my left shoulder. And down to my stomach that is peeking out from the bottom. I continue to breath slowly, trying to both calm myself and reach for the blanket. My finger twitched. The thing noticed! Eyes steadily moving from my stomach to the tops of my thighs. The shorts I wore to bed were old. Slightly too small, and barely covering my junk! I finally got the courage to grab the blanket and jerk it up to my chest, while also sitting up and screaming. Hoping with all my might that my parents or siblings hear me. Mid-scream I hear the thing speak, if you can call it that, in a rough voice it says 'Mine!'
As I look towards my door waiting for someone to come to my rescue. The thing must have jumped from my window, because when I turn back its gone. And now I feel cold and empty everywhere.
My older twin brothers come barging in. "What's wrong Basil?" That's Ash I can tell because he has a birthmark on his right cheek.
When I don't speak they come closer. Bear sitting next to me and rocking us gently. "What happened little brother?"
"I don't know. There was someone in here. No not someone... something." I can barely find my voice to answer him. It comes out breathy and light. Nothing like how I usually speak with confidence and authority.
"Well, we better take you to dad's room for the remainder of the night. They will protect you." Ash lifts me out of his twins arms and carries me to our parents room. I don't stop shaking as Bear opens the door and shakes our father awake.
"Huh, what.. hello." Father River was always a heavy sleeper and that never stopped him from waking up confused. Dad Cole always laughed at him for it. I'm sure that's why he hadn't heard me scream earlier.
"Father something tried to attack Basil." Bear is so serious all of a sudden. I almost feel like he knows something I don't.
"Okay. Basil can sleep with Cole. Bear please go outside and do a perimeter check. Take Ash with you. I will go check the cameras for the back of the house." Father gets out of bed and starts to dress before Ash can even set me in bed.
"Father what's happening?" My voice seems to cut through his foggy thinking. He stops with one arm in his t-shirt.
"Nothing. Everything will be okay. Boys, the perimeter check." As Ash and Bear leave Father turns to me, "You need to stay with Dad. If you see or hear something you can wake him up, yes?"
"Yes."
"Good boy. I will be back soon."
While Father left out the bedroom door I sided up to Dad Cole and wrapped a blanket around myself. If that thing came back I would surely be dead.
I don't remember falling back asleep. But I know I'm dreaming when I see myself in the forest. Dressed only in the clothes I had worn to bed. My feet bare, toes digging into the soil and twigs. A feeling of belonging enters my whole body.
"I'm sorry about before." The voice is so sudden I gasp and turn to see the person who spoke. He is a mountain of a man. Standing clear over me, eyes like the sun and long hair hanging down to his shoulders in an unkept sort of way. Leaves and twigs sticking out all over the place. His body looks muscular from what I can see. Legs covered in sweatpants and a tight fitted t-shirt on his upper body. Somehow still, his eyes are comforting. Like a warm hug in autumn.
"Who are you? Where are we? This must be a dream..." the first two questions are clearly directed at the man. And the second more whispered statement was only supposed to be for my own ears.
"We are in a dream place. Mine to be exact. I brought you here to apologize for my behavior earlier. I didn't want you to think me a monster. I was trying my hardest not to be seen. To not scare you." The sincerity in his voice cuts me like glass. I am so confused. What is this dream man talking about.
"When you saw me standing there, at the end of your bed. I panicked! My beastly side had taken over for a couple minutes and next thing I know I bolted out of your window. That's probably how I got in to begin with. You really should lock that!" His apology quickly turns to a teasing gesture. And here I stand stock still and wide eyed.
No! No, this man- This was my monster from my bedroom! How? Beasts don't exist anymore! They were exterminated! The last elven generation saw to the end of their kind.
I can feel my body shaking. I'm hyperventilating. No I'm waking up...

"...sil! Basil!" My Dad Cole is hovering over my body shaking my shoulders with both hands. "Basil, thank the gods! Are you okay? You were mumbling and shaking your head in your sleep. What are you doing in here anyways?"
"Sorry I was dreaming... I think" I was startled awake and that was the best response I could come up with. "Father is in the security room and Ash and Bear are doing a perimeter check. Something was in my bedroom earlier."
Dad Cole shoots upright. Hands still holding my shoulders, grip tighter than before.
"What did you see Basil." Dad Cole's eyes are wide and he looks frightened.
"Um, I didn't tell Father or Ash and Bear... Daddy I think it was a beast..." Just remembering how it looked standing above my bed makes my voice go soft and quiet again.
"Basil! How could you not tell your father about that!" Dad Cole rises from the bed and shuffles is closer to the door. Presumably to go to the security room.
"No Daddy please! He's my forever! My fated one!"
The choked response has Dad Cole stopping in his tracks. One foot out the bedroom door. He has gone quiet and is clearly think things over. I can just about see the wheels and cogs turning within his mind. How he is processing the different options.
"You still need to tell them. Tell all of them. Basil, you cannot keep this a secret." Dad Cole lowers his voice and I can only hope body else heard me before. That would be disastrous. Father River is half elf. He might try to destroy my fated.
"Okay, I'll tell them. You'll be there? Right next to me?" I'm scared. I don't want anything to happen to my family. But I also cannot let my family hurt my fated.
"Yes, I won't leave your side. Promise."
The walk to the security room is done in silence. Dad Cole and I each involved in our own thoughts. Barely even paying mind to the soft voices coming out of the the door at the end of the hallway. I must have Been sleeping for longer than I thought. Bear and Ash are back from the perimeter check.
