I swear each flight we get on just keeps getting worse and worse. I don't know if it was because of the level of anxiety I was on or the annoying brat of an 8-year-old who sat next to me and wouldn't stop whining to his mother about food.
Honestly child. If that was the only problem I had to deal with right now, life would be so good.
Let's get this straight, we were flying to Italy with absolutely zero ideas as to where Kayla and Josh were and how we were going to find them. Also, we didn't have enough money for accommodation, we were going to have to sought something dodgy out. If this was hell, then Jesus please forgive me for whatever I've done.
"Attention Ladies and Gentlemen. We will be shortly landing in the Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport in the city of Rome. We thank you kindly for flying with us. And we hope to see you next time". The flight attendant announced my most dreaded part of this flight- landing.
I'm not going even bother explaining to you the excruciating experience that was. But hey, we were in Rome, what else would we want? I could think of many things at this point.
I felt sick and exhausted. Italy was the dream...mum I made it.
I missed home, I missed being annoyed by my family, and studying and just the simplest things in life. I couldn't appreciate the world like this because frankly, the world sucked a lot right now.
Ryan and I checked out, went through customs and collected our baggage. Just the usual. As soon as we stepped out onto Italian soil, we immediately pulled our luggage next to us and sat on them not having one single clue of where and what we were doing next.
"So what now Muffin?"
"You tell me Einstein," I say with my chin leaning in my palms.
He just sighed in response. Where could they possibly be? We couldn't get anywhere and had no communication with anyone.
"Have you tried calling someone?" I ask with slight hope in my tone.
"Of course, I tried calling the number that's been calling me this entire time but it's blocked so it's only one way".
"We need to think of something, otherwise who knows what's going to happen to Kayla and Josh. Do you know anyone who lives in Rome that we can call?"
"The only family I have in Italy live in Venice" he was trying to think hard. And then, as if the gods had blessed him with knowledge I could see the bulb light up. With his mouth, wide open he quickly whipped out his phone and tried dialling a number.
"Wait, you know someone? Who is it?" I ask getting excited.
"It's a slim chance but maybe..." he held the phone out and put the call on loudspeaker. Someone picked up.
"Ciao" a mature female voice with a clear Italian accent answered the phone.
Ryan replied "Ciao Zia" [Hello, aunty]
If my jaw could drop to the ground it probably would have.
"Anita?!" my heart was screaming with joy. Never in my life would I be so relieved to hear the voice of the woman who made my cappuccinos every day.
I could hear her celebrate once she heard our voices and I was beaming at the phone in absolute awe.
"You know that trip I said I was going on?" Ryan asked.
"Mhm"
"Yeah well, we're in a bit of a pickle..."
"Certo che lo sei [of course you are], what is it this time?"
"Well, Alexis and I kind of umm...well we..." Ryan was having trouble admitting our situation to Anita, so I saved him.
"We're just really lost, and we don't know where to find a hotel to check into".
"You haven't booked a hotel yet? Are you guys crazy? Don't worry about it, I'll send you a number. It's my friends from Rome I'm sure they won't mind if you stay a night or two"
"Really? That would be amazing Zia thank you" Ryan and I could breathe again a little.
"Prego, ti amo. Ok, ho bisogno di tornare al lavoro. Ciao" [you're welcome, I love you. Ok, I need to get back to work. Bye].
"Ciao" both Ryan and I said in unison.
As promised, Anita sent us the international number for her friends in Rome named Diego and Valeria.
"I've got this Muffin". Ryan walked away with the phone to his ear, he introduced himself to Anita's friends and explained our situation- well not quite our entire situation. He told them our flight was so delayed that the hotel cancelled our booking and now we had nowhere to say. Total bullshit.
After Ryan finished with the phone call he walked back to me, "Well, they're on their way to pick us up now. They sounded so nice and welcoming we should be fine".
I smiled gently at him and lifted myself off the suitcase. I wrapped my arms around his neck and looked up at him.
"Well at least that's accommodation and food settled"
He laughs and wraps his arms around my waist, "Yes, look at us, such hustlers"
"What a story this is going to be for the kid, heh?" I didn't really mean to say that, but I'm so glad I did. Because instead of Ryan cowering away from the comment, he looked at me in absolute admiration. And my oh my I've never felt so in love. Yes, we've had and will continue to have so many ups and downs, but those will never break moments like these.
He slightly nodded with a smile on his face, "Yes, yes it will Muffin. But first, we want Kayla and Josh to be able to tell it to theirs"
"True"
"Occupation save Kayla and Josh from my dumb mistake and your psychotic dad is a go"
